    Handcuffs

Hi guys, I need to get some cuffs. I won't be needing them too often but I will need them some. I am an ER/hospital security guard and from what my coworkers are telling me they'll get some use a couple times a year. I assume that, like all products, there are some brands to avoid. What would you guys recommend?

Also, what are the pros and cons of handcuff holders? Which would you recommend and why, between the closed pouch type and the type which leaves the cuffs half exposed at the top?

    Thanks.

Also if any of you guys have some cuffs/holders you wanna sell cheap, let me know!

I like Peerless. It's easier to double lock them. Still can't go wrong with Smith and Wesson though.

Either way. Get your name engraved on them. You don't want to "lose" them...

That being said, is that a good brand, or are you just bringing them up because they are such a nice accessory piece?

5150 + Pink cuffs... Appropriate or ironic, I can't decide.

That said, there's nothing wrong with the ASP cuffs. I'm not sure how the double lock on the Peerless cuffs works, but if it's easier-- that's what I'd go with.

I've used Peerless cuffs for 32+ years. I had to buy some when I was a reserve deputy (before I became a regular) and the fellas told me to get those. After 30 years my original pair was taken out of service and have been put away for my 'rookie' shadow box for when I retire.

As far as what case/holder to use, does the hospital have any 'policy' of which styles you can use? You say you may not be using them all that often and proficiency to remove them from the holder may suffer when they are needed. I would suggest the open style holder for being easier to get to them quickly. They will collect more dust/dirt/shirt lint with that style so clean them more often.

My dept. uses some cheap brand they buy at Galls and Smith cuffs... the smith ones last much longer... always breaking the cheap ones...
alot of our officers buy the ASP and have been pleased but you have to buy spl. cases...
as to cleaning... as much as 60% of the probationers/parolees have hep.... I clean mine every use...with the sanitizer I keep in the trunk...and wear gloves...hep is bad juju...

I use Peerless hinged. Been serving with pride since 1997 on the same set!

I used both Peerless and S&W. They both work well.

I carried two pairs of Peerless on my duty belt, and kept a couple of pairs of S&W and a couple of flex cuffs, in my war bag for many years. Early on I carried the S&W until I found Peerless. One of the S&W broke a lock after about fifteen years of service and I replaced that with a few more flex cuffs in the bag.

No experience with ASP but I hear good things from those I know who've used them.

+1 to keep them clean and sanitary. Keeping the locks lubed with a bit of graphite now and then is about the only PM needed.

I have used both Peerless and S&W for almost 32 years. I prefer the peerless because of the keyhole location. I have never had a problem with either brand.

Same here, tho not as much time of course.

The dept. issued S&W (which I had to turn in when I retired) and I bought Peerless. Still have those and my wife and I.......never mind.

I would recommend a closed case for safety reasons; that extra second it takes to open the case might give you enough time in case someone is trying to remove them and hit you with them.

Tho I've seen other deps (in custody) carry them without cases, that is not only a safety risk IMO, it is also a possible back problem if you are sitting a lot and they are pressing against/near your spine.

Tho I never did carry that way, I say this as a "professional" back patient.

like others here I have used S&W and Peerless as primary restraints for years.
I also have 2 sets of Hiatts alloy light-weight cuffs. these are very good for off

I use S&W cuffs. No problems in eleven years. Like El Gato said clean the cuffs every time you use them. There's some Funkie stuff in the emergency room.
