    When God was Making Cops

Something I would like to share:

    When God was making Cops

When the Lord was creating cops, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."

"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."

"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals.
And he has to have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look
reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right ma'am,' when he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop ... and still it keeps its sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."

"You're a genius," said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. "Actually, I didn't put it there," he said.

I love it I would like to print a copy and post it in the watch office.

I bare it before me into battle, but it is not my own.
It protects the brother on my left.
                  It protects my city.
I will never let my brother out of its shadow, nor my city from its
                  shelter.
I will die with my shield before me, facing the enemy.

Very nice. Reminds me of this poem that was posted in my old department's break room:

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

                    "Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
                    "No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
                    can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
                    and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
                    That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
                    And sometimes, God forgive me,
                    I've wept unmanly tears.

                    I know I don't deserve a place
                    Among the people here.
                    They never wanted me around
                    Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
                    It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
                    As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his god.

                    "Step forward now, policeman,
                    You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

You can trust me. I'm a arecrooman... aircroomen... airecrewmen... I fly on planes.

Although my thanks goes out to all LEO's who do their duty to the fullest, I chuckled a little at the "meager civil service paycheck" part. I serve officers every day and I can tell you there there isn't much more wasted time and money than there is in law enforcement. Getting paid 4 hours of OT to show up to court only to have the case dismissed. Motor officers sitting at home helping their kids with homework, sill on the clock. I hear them all. Good story though...I read a similar version about our military.

You are right, in Ca. most leos get a pretty decent salary and the cost of living here is pretty high also. Not all leos around the country get paid as well. I know one sgt. in a 12 man force in S. Ill. who makes so little he had to get a second job driving a school bus.

The rest of your post is simply leo bashing, so knock it off.

Dear 00BuckShot, perhaps here's one that won't provide the same "chuckle."

                          Trooper's Prayer

                          Heavenly Father,
Each time I walk this long walk, I pray I might be prepared to meet any confrontation I may encounter. That I might never be the undue aggressor, never lose my tongue in anger, and always put forth my best efforts for each task.

And if ever I am called on to face the ultimate trial of life and death, that I might be victorious, in the name of all for which I stand. If not, that as I leave this world, I might drive the soul of my aggressor before me. But please don't let die alone on some dirty highway.

                          Amen.

Not finding a "Chuckle" here either 00BuckShot

                          Tonight I hit my knees,
                          Before I hit the streets.
                          O' God I pray that I don't see
The things that I fear inside of me.

                          A lonely stretch of highway,
                          A mother calls her child.
                          A bent and twisted wreck,
                          Her screams relentless and wild.

                          Searching the grassy shoulder,
                          For something I can't see.
Not really wanting to find it,
A "pain" begins inside of me.

                          An Infant small and lifeless,
                          Lays alone inside the night.
Reaching down I feel the warmth,
And pray with all my might.

As I kneel beside the body,
                          A tear escapes my eye.
I look up toward the heaven's,
And hope that I won't cry.

For me the night will last forever,
                          And the child never will.
As I scoop her up against my chest,
And hold her till she's still.

                          God "take my strength's...
                          My happiness, my life...
                          If only she won't die.
I'd gladly trade it all just to hear her cry"

A lonely place, a small grave I stand before,
                          After everyone is gone.
                          I never knew this child,
But her Memory will forever linger on.

                          Tonight I hit my knees,
                          Before I hit the streets.
                          O' God I pray that I don't see,
The things I fear inside of me. Amen.

                          "Policeman's Prayer"

When I start my tour of duty God,
                          Wherever crime may be,
as I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.

Please give me understanding with both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention until their story's told.
Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way,
but let me hold my patience let each man have his say.

Lord if some dark and dreary night,
                          I must give my life,
                          Lord, with your everlasting love
protect my children and my wife.

Working in road construction during the winter I got paid 4 hours for showing up even if it started raining and we never got out of our cars. It's either a STATE law or Union thing (not sure), not a department/job thing. My wife had the same experience when she worked for Kaiser; if your employer requires you to show up at all they have to pay you for 4 hours worth of work, even if they only need you for 1 hour. So, it's not a LEO's fault that the type of work lends itself to that situation. Also, I don't think it's the LEO's fault that so many people want to play the "Innocent until proven guilty" card when they are guilty and just want to get out of the punishment.
Society, please stop sheltering your children from the consequences of their actions and start disciplining them so they don't grow up in a fantasy world where they are the center of the universe and think they can run from their poor choices.
