Saw this recently on the failblog site. Anyone know the story here? May be related to the bomb detecting K9s in the .gov or K9 handlers evac-ing their K9s?

Looks like training to get their dogs used to being carried... ??Guns, dogs and home alarms. Opponents are all of a sudden advocates once their personal space is violated.

I'll hazard a guess, but I could be completely wrong. These are MWD's (Military Working Dogs). That's how the armed forces refer to their K9 Corps. I've seen LEO K9 handlers do similiar drills for multi purpose. It builds confidence in the dog that their handler can pick them up, place them in a vulnerable position, and not drop them. They learn trust, and this builds the bond. The handler does it for stamina, and weight bearing training. The exercise has practicality for a dog that has been injured, (trauma), can not get out of harm's way to avoid further injury, and needs to rely on his handler's ability, strength, and confidence to get them quickly to safety.Comment

It's a necessary exercise as their could be terrain you wouldn't want the dog to step on such as broken glass.Comment

I handle a 7 year old black Malinois. We carry dogs in training so they don't go berserk when we have to lift them over a fence, hoist them into an attic, or save their lives.sigpicNRA Life MemberComment

Well as a former dog driver (Mal & one of those german dogs...) We did this for several reasons. Confidence builder is one for both a new dog and his/her new handler. A second reason would be lifting the dog for a multitude of reasons...like over broken glass on a 459, or in the case of caustic chemicals on a floor (we had top search a wheel polishing place once, nasty stuff on the floor) also for teaching a dog how to get the heave ho into an attic. Lifting your dog also makes you realize that having a 100 pound dog may look intimidating but it sucks to lift...
Best time I ever spent on the job.
