    Questons about Irvine PD

I am considering applying for Irvine PD and have a few questions.

How are the interviews conducted, are they basic question and answer or are applicants given scenarios to respond to?

How is the cost of living in Irvine, can it be done on the PD salary?

In regards to its proximity to LA, are Irvine's problems largely its own, or do idiots from LA show up and cause the majority of problems?

How do you like working for IPD? Anything you would change?

Do you have the option to partner up with another officer for patrol or are you on your own?

Is it possible to do a ride-along?

I understand that there are potentially three different academy sites that recruits could be sent to for POST training, when would a recruit know where they would receive their training?

What is the standard issue firearm?

Also, is there a forum specifically for CA Peace Officers?

    That's all for now, thanks.

Regarding all those questions...Best thing to do is contact the Irvine PD recruiting Sergeant.

Next, here is the CA Law Enforcement forums,

irvine is probably the most antiseptic, boring, uptight yuppie city in orange county. Its a nice city beautiful CLEAN ORDERLY city. The cops there seem to of come off a assembly line. Anyday now I expect them to have glowing red eyes and a plasma rifle in the 40 watt range in their hand.
They are however the highest starting pay PD in OC. As for the rent in the city of irvine its expensive to live there. A small 8-1000 Sq Ft apartament will start at about 1400 a month give or take 50-80$. I personally would live in a different city ( costa mesa huntington Beach Westminster, Fountain valley) rent wont be that much different bt yeah you can easily make rent and have money on a cop salary.

On a good note there are TONS of SUPER FINE women there and there is no shortage of them there or the neighboring cities. And there are tons of things to do. plenty of gun stores, ranges, and did i mention the women?

You are wrong about the ranges. We need an outdoor range down here.

I am on the list for Irvine, so I'll answer what I can.

1- First, fill out the online application. Human Resources screens for basic qualifications.

Then you are given a written test. Irvine uses it's own test, not the state POST exam, so you'll have to sit for it even if you've tested with other agencies. It's multiple choice and takes 2-3 hours.

If you score high enough (note- you can pass and still not score high enough) you'll be invited for an oral interview. Just a couple of "standard" interview questions, the types you're asked everywhere else.

If they like you in the interview, they will send you a polygraph question packet. You fill it out and go in and go over your answers before the actual polygraph. If there are any issues (hard drug use for example) you will be dropped like a hot potato on the spot. If all seems well, you'll schedule the actual polygraph. After that, is the background check, again, pretty standard if you've gone through the process elsewhere.

After the background is the physical agility test. Assuming you pass everything, your last interview is with the Chief (Maggard) and a tentative job offer. You can be sent to either the OC Sheriff's Academy, Golden West or (the other one- I am blanking on it right now). I have heard you can request one if you live particularly close to one of the three, but no guarantees.

2- cost of living in Irvine is pretty steap, but it can be done on a officer's salary. If you're single, get a nice apartment home and work as much overtime as you can (available at the spectrum and verizon amphitheater). If you are married, I hope your wife has a good job too and/or is ok with you working a lot of overtime. However, as said above, surrounding cities are pretty nice and lower cost of living (Tustin, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Laguna Hills, etc.)

3- Not hired yet, so I wouldn't know. I can say, however, that Irvine has a reputation of being a BY THE BOOK agency. I have heard this from about half a dozen different officers from Irvine and other agencies. Think about that very carefully. Any officer on these boards knows what that means. Every "i" dotted, every "t" crossed. Every call, no matter how mundane, is responded to and 99% of the time there's paperwork. God forbid you break leather on your holster. Be prepared to answer for it to the WC. This fact is why Irvine looses most of its officers in the FTO portion, especially transfers. Many officers who are used to bending the rules now and then, or taking a short cut on paperwork, can not operate at Irvine PD. If you're an attention-to-detail, slightly anal-retentive type, you'll do well there.

There's next to no crime in Irvine, so stops of minor traffic infractions can and will be the most exciting part of many shifts there. Rolling code 3 to anything is a pretty rare thing in Irvine.

4- Unless you're in FTO or special assignment, Irvine PD rolls around in single person units. However, low crime rate means back up is usually no more than 2-3 minutes away.

5- Ride alongs can be arranged, although they *prefer* to give them only to persons who have applied for a job there. Still, doesnt hurt to call and ask.

6- The tree sites are Golden West, OC Sheriff's academy or Rio Hondo (not sure on that last one). Again, you can submit a preference, but the choice isn't up to you really.

7- standard issue weapons are of the Sig series.

Additional notes- yes the women are FINE. I went to UC Irvine for 5 years. There's always good "scenery" in a college town. However, as stated above, its a really quiet city where everything is done by the book. It's also a pretty small agency. The city is just over the 300,000 population mark, and there's only 200 sworn personnel (about 2/3 work patrol. Others are detectives and officers who don't see much street time). By comparison, Torrance PD in LA County is about 225,000 people and their department is 350-ish strong.

Also, and most importantly, AFAIK, Irvine is not accepting applications at this time. I applied in Febuary and I was in the last group they accepted. Right now, given the budget, they are on a hiring freeze. I am in the process, but only made it to the background check before everything was frozen.

Apply to a bunch of agencies because the small ones only hire a couple of people a year even in the good times.

No, do not apply to Irvine Security.

There are real LE agencies hiring (assuming you are not a White Male).

Huh. As a white male, I know what you mean. 90% of the faces I saw applying at OC agencies were white males.

Problem with OC agencies is they have maybe 2-4 jobs available and 300+ applicants.

Irvine has 200,00 people, not 300,000 (although sometimes it seems to be 300K). Safest city in America. Very uptight PD, leadership, rank and file often very bored - the joke is that a cat up a tree call will generate 2 units plus a Supervisor.

I'm not IPD but live in City and know some folks. IPD very by the book.

                        Good luck!

I live in irvine and if someone steals a candy bar they will call out the chopper, like someone said earlier you can live in a city next to irvine and it will be AT LEAST 1 or 2 hundred dollars cheaper.

LOL I think you have a better chance of having sex with a porn star than to open a outdoor shooting range in OC.
