    Perception of ccw permit holders.

I'm wondering what you leo's think about ccw permit holders, when interviewing people involved in minor car accidents. Minor accidents, no injuries, drug or alcahol involved, everyone friendly. Do you look at permit holders as being well vetted and generally people of good character? Is it advantages (or not) for permit holders to provide this info.?
This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

Disclaimer....I work in law enforcement as a non uniformed employee. I work hand in hand with officers and I am a post certified trainer. I also fall under POBR even as a non uniformed employee. 23 years on the job.

When I am the first point of contact with someone and they inform me they are a ccw holder I always thank them for being one. Most of the officers I work with do the same or have no reaction.

I still use my best judgement when dealing with ccw holders the same way I do with everyone else. Your actions during the contact are all weighed the same as anyone else and being a ccw holder does not change the outcome of the contact.

It is always a good idea to let the contacting officer know you are a holder especially if you are handing over your drivers license.

LEOs are individuals, and everyone is going to have their own opinion. Some will be in favor, some will dislike, and some will be neutral. Just because one group is in the majority doesn't mean you won't encounter others with different opinions. So keep that in mind.

Personally I've put my other classes on hold so I can conduct as many CCW classes as I can. I think the more responsible owners are out there the better.

Why not? It should be the right of every law abiding citizen to be able to conceal carry. 27 out 50 states already allow conceal carrying without a permit..

So most LE on a lawful stop/encounter are not going to take someone's word on a statement they make (non my pants, not my car, I'm a CCW holder) and will cautiously proceed with their investigation etc.

After corroborating evidence is presented based on the totality of that encounters circumstances (the demeanor, acknowledgement of the reason for the stop, condition of vehicle, returns, presentation of DL, Insurance, Registration and CCW card etc.) then the guard will lessen and the officer's concern would lessen and then the realization of how much effort the licensed CCW went through to obtain the card, some appreciation and for me (I hope others) leniency would be presented.

My only contacts with permit holders have all been during unofficial/non-investigatory terms.

The permit has no bearing on my collection of statements or observations of the tc scene. It is not material.

Remember to provide any notifications as required by your permit conditions.

As for view of vetting and character, possessing a ccw permit only tells me that upon granting/renewal the holder met all the requirements. My partners and I have investigated and arrested enough people from what would be generally considered good backgrounds/jobs or vetting to not assume too much about the day anyone is having.

If you worked in Los Angeles County, then that makes sense.

28 years in Patrol. I only encountered a handful of CCW licensed individuals, all of which were more than eager to let me know. Much appreciated, and never an issue.

I'm not LE - I'm just regular Joe with CCW since 2003

Of the five (5) times I been pulled over since 2003, never had a problem with providing CCW with CDL upon request. Mendocino County does NOT require producing CCW, but askes that you do. Therefore, I use my better judgement.

The one and ONLY time I did NOT produce CCW upon request of my CDL was in San Jose CA. - NOTORIOUS Santa Clara County!

San Jose Police had me dead to rights speeding. So ... okay SPD Officer, write the ticket please so I can go about my day, thank you.

Gotta watch them San Jose PD Officers ... they are NOT CCW friendly!!! And that's what I want to say regarding this thread. You not going to get favorable response from SJPD or SCSO.

Other two Counties were Sonoma and Mendocino LE, not because they didn't ticket me, I would've accepted the ticket of course - Just saying..., really GREAT group of Law Enforcement Officers - just perfect.
