    Reserve Officer Off Roster Handgun

    Hi Everyone,

I'm about to get sworn in as a Reserve Officer. The department is requiring that I switch my duty weapon to a 9mm since that's the only ammo they carry. I was thinking of getting a Sig Sauer P320, but its an off roster handgun.

I thought reserve officers are also exempt from off roster handgun ban and 10 day wait. However, my background investigator is telling me I'm not eligible to purchase off roster and might have to go with a glock 17 gen 3.

Does anyone have experience with purchasing off roster? I need to purchase ASAP to do my quals.

Only level 1 and 2 are exempt from roster...no one is exempt from 10 days unless you have a letter from the chief of PD or sheriff and or a C&R AND COE

Majority of agencies also have an APPROVED DUTY WEAPON LIST.

Is the P-320 on their list?

Reserves are roster exempt if they are authorized to carry while on duty--regardless of level.

It sounds like the OP is in a chicken/egg situation. He needs a duty pistol before getting sworn in. Once he's sworn he's roster exempt but not until then.

Seems odd his department doesn't issue a pistol and is requiring he purchase it himself.

PS. Congratulations on getting sworn in.

I would buy Gen 3 Glock, get sworn and qual with it then buy Sig and requal with that as primary or alternate duty.

You can then resell the Glock if you don't like it.

Congrats on getting sworn. That's some pretty serious commitment if you have to buy your own equipment.

Ok, but even if you get are allowed to carry a Glock 17 Gen 3, you cannot carry ten round magazines for duty carry. You need to qualify and carry standard 17 round magazines for duty. So, it is really goofy they are making you qualify before you are sworn. Once you are sworn, I would ask your command for Chief letter in order to buy an off roster pistol and magazines.

Viet- You don't need to have a letter to buy an off-roster gun or magazines, you just need ID that shows you are a reserve officer (any level). Ask your command if you can be sworn in first, and then qualify before you go 10-8. That's the way our dept does it (although we issue duty weapons).

What weapon did you use in your academy (I assume it wasn't a 9mm)? If you already have the approved holster, magazines, etc. but it is not 9mm, maybe they will let you buy your own approved ammo for your current gun? Then, once you get your department ID, you can go to any LEO friendly gun store and buy an off roster 9mm with correct capacity magazines?

In all honesty, a Glock 17 gen 3 would serve you well. The day you would carry it on duty, you would be qualified to buy 17 round magazines, so you should be good to go

OP's situation has me perplexed. His agency is making him purchase his own weapon that he's carrying on duty as a reserve? If he gets in an OIS, his personally owned duty weapon is going to be stuck in evidence. Is his agency going to make him purchase another duty weapon?

I don't have reserves but have retired annuitants and part time cops. I issue duty weapons (Glock 17 Gen5 and/or Glock 48) to RA's and part timers. I thought other agencies did the same with reserves once they are sworn in. Guys in agencies with reserves, what does your agency do?

OP, congrats on getting picked up as a reserve. Obviously you are dedicated to assisting the community, considering the fact you are putting a significant amount of your own money forward for required duty equipment.

Orange County Sheriff's Dept issues department weapons and magazines (standard capacity) when you are in the academy. They also issue uniforms and equipment (Sam Brown, baton, etc.) but no badge/ID until you successfully graduate the academy. As a Reserve, once you pass backgrounds and are hired (subject to graduating the academy) OCSD provides all of the gear and equipment, including duty weapon. This is how it was done when I attended in 2008 and I assume it is still the same.

I would carry the most common gun at the agency.

Should you need it, you can give or take magazines from other officers.

                          Glock fits Glock

If they all carry Glock, get a Glock.

If you need a 1911 / sig grip angle, pay and have the grip angle mod done and the angle changed.
