Glock 22 Gen 5 Holster Compatibility

    FYI - Safariland dealer here:

I have gotten LE customer feedback that the Safariland holsters for Gen 5 Glock 17 (Center code 835 /8325) may be too tight for the new Gen 5 Glock 22. This was tried on a handful of samples.

Safariland and/or Glock may make revisions at a later date, but for now I thought I would share.

Looks like the dimensions are a bit different per Glock:

Stay safe out there and happy Friday

Gen5 Glock has an ambi slide release. Some holsters don't have a cut out channel on the right side for it. A few holsters have enough play to accommodate the right slide release without a cut out channel

I bought a new Gen 5 G22 and found out the same thing. Won't fit in my holsters that my Gen 3 G22 used to fit. I have a Gen 5 G17 and it fits fine.

Kind of annoying, as I have a lot of different style holsters that would fit many Glock models, and the new G5 G22 doesn't really fit any of them.

I do have holsters for a G21/G20 and have been using those for my G5 G22. They actually work pretty well.

Not sure why Glock decided to change things on just the new G22

There is NO difference in the Gen 5 frame sizes between Glock 17 and 22.

The slide on the 22 Gen 5 is heavier and wider, and that is what is causing the fit issues.

As you point out, the .40 cal was beefed up in the Gen5 as the original intent of just using a bigger cartridge in the 9mm-designed guns didn't work out so well. I have thousands of rounds of mid-velocity 165 grain .40 through each of my original Glock 22, 23 and 35 without any problems. However, regular use of the higher velocity 165 and 155 grain rounds, and the very energetic Winchester 180 BHP, caused numerous breakages of the parts you mentioned, plus slide rail deformation. Even the original 180 grain @ 950 fps was a bit too much for the Glock. I have noticed that recent lots of 180 grain loads have been quietly reduced to actual velocities around 900 fps, with no change in published specs.

I bought a Gen5 23 recently and a kydex Vedder AIWB holster for it. It was specifically designed (as advertised) for the wider slide of the gen5. Well guess what, it’s still tighter than I’d like it, even with the retention screw as loose as possible. I don’t like holster makers that don’t perfect newer products they make, when comparing them to their quality old versions.
