I would say that’s unbelievable, but unfortunately it is not anymore.

Maybe someone should send Sgt "Crow" a link to this video . . .

And he was only charged with aggressive panhandling and given a ticket - seriously wtf

Roman, of Canarsie, has been accused of aggressive panhandling and was slapped with a desk appearance ticket, police sources said.

An example to us older types, don't get fat and if we get into a "discussion" end it quickly because you don't have any stamina.

Or just don't get involved in streetfights. If you enter into mutual combat the law may not see you as a victim, but rather a willing participant.

                          A google for CA found:

[A fight is mutual combat when it began or continued by mutual consent
or agreement. That agreement may be expressly stated or implied and
must occur before the claim to self-defense arose.]

Depends. Where I live, by statute, one may "meet force with force, including deadly force". By law one is not required to retreat from anyplace that person has a right to be.

                            'Course, your mileage may differ.

IMO, don't have enough info to critique/judge BUT, all else being equal, if/when we're off-duty, we should be picking and choosing our battles carefully. Was there a NEED to take action? Was there an opportunity to defuse and/or disengage earlier in the contact (even if you/we are totally in the right)? Did we consider worse case scenarios?

I've trained for most of my life but, especially as I get older, I'm not above swallowing some pride to avoid a potentially life threatening situation when I'm the only one there at the time, there are three potential opponents, each of whom could possibly be armed with more than one deadly weapon and maybe I'm out of practice or out of shape or not as good/ready as I think I am... This retired sergeant is fortunate that it wasn't worse for him! (and yes, the scumbags need a good ash-kicking at minimum...)
