    Why?

Why would CHP be providing an escort for a motorcycle ride? I was watching traffing go by and saw a CHP with flashing lights being followed closely by about 300 MC's. No one was exceeding the speed limit. Just thought it was interesting, because we have atleast two rides a week through here.

It could have been a demonstration of some type or a charity function.

If I am not mistaken, you can contract with most agencies to do this type of escort. As long as it doesn't cost tax payer money. i.e., they pay $XX an hour to cover the OT, vehicle gas, officer benefits, etc....

The question becomes who was doing the riding? Hells Angels on their group "charity rides" are often escorted by law enforcement for a variety of reasons. I'd assume that Mongols might get the same treatment.

Hells Angels or Mongols.....the cop would probably be behind them lighting them up.

Cope, if you are in the bay area, it was probably for the Fallen Heroes benefit in downtown Oakland. www.opdfallenheroes.com.

Negative, I'm in the motherload. It was a CHP car not bike. And CHP was pretty busy closing of sections of highway for the annual parade today. also the PR guy was making his last appearance in the parade as he retires in june or july. Think Sonora or Jamestown. All the bikes ended up at Jamestown Harley Davidson.

The Sonora CHP escorts several MC groups out of the Harley Davidson Shop in Jamestown such as the "Toys 4 Tots Ride" "The Muscular Dystrophy Ride" Etc. They just shut down Hwy 49 for a few minutes so that the 100 or so MC's can all pull out in unison to form an uninterupted procession, then open traffic back up. It's a lot safer for the public this way. For these events the CHP Officers are on regular assigned beats, not on compensated OT, since we are talking about a 20 minute committment. If the beat units get tied up or need augmentation, one of the special duty officers will break free and go down there since the CHP Office is only 1/4 of a mile from the Harley Davidson Shop. There are no motor units assigned out of the Sonora CHP Area.

If you check the Union Democrat, I'm sure there will be an article about it in Monday's edition.

Plus, you'd be amazed how many people can miss a 170+ lb guy on a bike if it wasn't CHP. There's tons of accidents where a guy/gal in a car/truck/suv state "came out of nowhere to my right/left". Safety for all involved....

And that's not CHP at funerals? So posers crapped all over my cousin's funeral when he came back as a KIA!?

It was more than likely an Officer Down Memorial ride, with a cover charge for participation and proceeds going to the fallen officer's family. I went on one about a month ago through northern San Diego.

CHP contracts out for various events to provide escorts. These are reimbursable costs, not paid for by taxpayers. CHP also does movie details, funerals, all kinds of stuff really. Those units you see in construction zones at night - caltrans reimbursable contract. All overtime details.

                        chp escort

I rode in the San Diego event. It is a charity ride for fallen officers and their families.
