Questions about CCW in center console

    Hey all,

Two quick questions about weapon storage in vehicles.

    1) Can a CCW holder place a weapon in the center console of a vehicle while driving or riding as a passenger? I know it can't be 'stored' there, but I assume that means when the vehicle is parked and vacant.

    2) I'm currently rocking a huge metal lockbox, cable-tethered around the seat mount under the back seat of my crewcab truck for weapon storage. This means that when I need to disarm, I'm doing so standing outside the truck, between the driver and rear door, hoping to not be noticed. Same when I rearm.
I'd like to get a lockable case that would go in the lower part of center console (under the 'junk tray') that would allow me to disarm, securely stow, and rearm with all the truck doors closed. As this would result in the weapon being stored in a locked case, albeit within the console, is this allowed?

I could ask in the CCW forums, and I am sure both of these questions have been beat to death there, but I'm hoping for more real-world opinions.

    Thanks in advance!

Aren't you "storing" your pistol in the console while you drive?

Any object placed into any container is "stored" there until it's removed.
      Poke'm with a stick!

          1. I don’t recall if there was a an exception to PC 25850 where it defined it could be carried in the vehicle, as long as you had clear knowledge and control over it. Either way, like GizmoSD said, I wouldn’t give you a hard time about it.

          2. Any time I’ve been forced to arm/disarm, I just do it in the car. I normally carry appendix, just take it out, lock it in the box that’s under a seat, and do the reverse when I put it back on me. No one has been the wiser.

If you do have it in the center console make sure nobody else is in the car with you because they would have easy access to it which is a no no.

Also don’t keep the car reg or proof of insurance in there in case you do get pulled over you don’t want to reach in where there’s a gun.

That is a great question. When I attended my original class that same question came up and the instructor simply said it must be on your person but in separate conversation at the qualifying range a few of us talked about it privately and one of the guys who was re qualifying said he was a retired LEO and frequently put his side peace in the center console and never heard of any law requiring it be on your person at all times when in a vehicle.

I would like to here more conversation about real world policies from LEO who might have actual experiences.

One of the things I dread most is having to disarm or re-arm in a public place just to go in a prohibited building or where signs are very visible restricting firearms. In the latter case I know that signs have no force of law unless you are detected and then you are trespassing but I try to respect property rights most of the time.

If I were you I would Take weapon out of holster leaving empty holster IWB, wrap rag or old towel around it and drop gently onto the back seat while seated in driver seat. Hop out open back door fiddle with lock box and no one is the wiser.

Get a Console Vault. Two renewals ago, I told my CCW Investigator I had one, and he said, “That’s what I use. That’s what everyone around here uses.”
