Picking a gun shop to make an off-roster purchase

I'm a fed and moved to CA not long ago.

I'd like to buy two handguns that aren't on the roster. One is readily available around the US and the price is more or less the same online (for non-CA residents). But occasionally one of the big online stores will put it on sale.

The other is a little more obscure and a little more expensive, and price can vary online depending on supply and demand. At least that's my theory. Currently it's sold out at most of the big online dealers and the shops that seem to have it are selling it for a few hundred more than just a few months ago. I suspect when the importer gets a new shipment in and they get distributed out to the retailers the price will fall again and there will be sales.

Do gun shops that sell off-roster to LEOs go through their dealer/distributor and essentially charge you a markup on what it costs them? Or do you find the pistol you want and have the CA gun store order it from the out-of-state shop and then pay a transfer fee to the CA gun shop?

In short, does it pay to shop around at gun stores? Will it pay for me to wait for a sale from the online sellers? Or is that irrelevant to the price I'll end up paying.

    I'm in LA.

    Thanks.

I recommend Guns Direct in Burbank. They always have LE in the store shopping and they are veteran owned. They have a selection of off roster guns displayed as well.

Ammo Bros also has a decent selection for LEO.

I believe the Proforce in Brea has very good prices, especially Glock prices cannot be beaten by others.

Pro Force in Brea is LE only and very good. Crosshairs in Torrance has a wall of LE only handguns and lots of LEO customers. Since I retired I am out of luck, roster-wise. Being retired is well worth it, though.

Try Proforce in Brea. They are open to LE and First Responders only. Proforce has a very good selection of off roster handguns.

The LAPRAAC firearms/duty gear store located at the LAPD Academy Elysian Park is another good option, at least for your purchase of the more commonly available off-roster handgun.

As a fed also new to LA I initially thought it was only for LAPD officers but I ended up picking up a new Glock there with ease, and at the same price as ProForce Brea had on their website.

Welcome to Calguns socalFLEO from a retired LASD leo.

Since Proforce in Brea has been mentioned once or twice or thrice, I'll mention another one that is far from L.A. but might be worth a look. All State Equipment in Pomona.

Proforce. Nuff said. These other guys CANT and WONT get close to their prices. Especially if you want a Glock.

That's actually true, if your only factor is the lowest possible price. Glock forbids home based ffls from participating in blue label programs, rebate programs, points programs, and every other kind of program. Huge advantage that glock gives to proforce and others. If time is a factor, the answer might change
