What are you looking for career-wise?


CSA's work in non-inmate contact positions, i.e, inside jail guard stations. As a CSA, you will do a LOT of button-pushing and paperwork/record keeping kind of duties, such as activity logs, inmate counts and visiting logs. It is a stable job, with relatively limited advancement.

The SSO position is kind of a unique breed of cat. They are on-duty peace officers, but the position exists in a sort of grey-area as to what they can and can't do. Off-duty CCW? Don't ask.

If you are seeking a peace-officer career, I agree with explosivewhale's comment and recommend just going for the Deputy position. You'll go through the same background process. If you are GTG medically, etc., might as well go for the best career opportunities.

I agree with others, if you can make it as a deputy, go for that training. California POST opens many doors not just the jail. And if you graduate and you really are good at the jail you could actually stay there your whole career.

However backgrounds will be very stringent especially questioning your judgment.
