Any LAPD guys that were around for the mandatory switch over to the pelican 7060 flashlight. I know the pelican is a solid flashlight and was considering purchasing one for patrol. I have a streamlight SL 20L LED that I am still allowed to carry and that I love, but I am contemplating getting with the times LOL (Lighter to lug around, etc). I’m sure you guys weren’t happy at first, but at this point would anyone go back to the SL 20 if you were allowed to? Or once you got used to the pelican was it just that much more of an improvement over the Steamlight that you would stay with it?

LAPD Pelican 7060

If you buy a replacement light, does it have to be polymer? If not, there are much smaller lights that have significantly more output than the Pelican 7060. -
What he said. SL has lights smaller with brighter and better beams. The Strion DS HL is one.
And not to mention SL faster and better CS when dealing with warranty issues.
I have the 7060, but use as back up.

Majority of my lights are SL with the exception of my one handheld SF.
I still use my SL20 and put in a 1000 lumen drop in and have it with me in my patrol bag and bring it out on pretty much all of my calls.
I thought about getting the Ultrastinger for a smaller full size light which is brighter than my SL20 or Stinger, but I have enough. For now. Haha.Comment

Turned in the Pelican when I retired. Still have a SL20.
Being retired I don't have much use for either one.Comment

The Hatfield Light....
Shouldn't the LAPD Pelican 7060 really be named the "Hatfield" Light? This after the last officer to use one (SL-20) in a televised beating, leading to the replacement of all metal flashlights.....Last edited by John1960; 05-08-2019, 8:54 PM.Comment

The "Hatfield" light would be the full size metal light (SL 20) used by an officer during an incident. Which led to the replacement of full size metal flashlights to the current Pelican.
There was a short period of time between the SL 20 and the Pelican when officers used Stingers.Comment

I think Sac PD also uses this light or at least the folks that I've seen.
I like my 7060. I've had mine since 2004 (I got it secondhand from another Ofc to try) and it's still kicking. I've found that the dual button system works great for low-light shooting/quals where a WML is not used. I actually don't use the rear switch at all because it's a bit large for that operation style. Battery life is good, but I still charge it daily. Big enough to use as a blunt object and small enough to not hinder movement or need to take on and off your belt to sit.
My cons are: It's definitely not as bright as other options out there. The beam pattern is more focused than flood and it's not adjustable.
There's a larger variant of the 7060 available called the 8060 if you like the classic D battery Maglite size.Last edited by code_blue; 05-08-2019, 3:36 PM.Comment

Thanks for the replies. I am not limited to poly lights per department policy (part of the reason that makes me want to hang onto the SL 20 because in this day and age I guess it’s a privilege to be able to as ridiculous as that is!). Even though there are brighter options in smaller packages out there, I was considering the Pelican with the thinking it was a good balance between portability over the SL 20 and still big enough to be able to be used as an impact weapon in an emergency. I was putting the Pelican in “newer” technology category, but now that I am thinking about it it really has been out for a long time now. Time sure does fly!Comment

There’s a ~$50 LED drop in for the SL, I think the brand is Terralux, that gives a 600 or more lumen output; I can’t recall exactly. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t give a great hotspot, and is a really bright flood. Still pretty nice from what I’ve seen.
I got a LED drop in from Malkoff Devices. He custom makes them and is about 1000 lumens. The housing is made of aluminum, gives a great hotspot and excellent flood. It cost me around $80, but it was worth every penny, IMO. He doesn’t always keep them in stock, and I just e-mailed him and asked him to let me know when he made a new batch. He makes a bunch of other drop ins and his own flashlights too. Good stuff.Comment

Pelican did update the output on these. The newer models have a higher lumen rating IIRC.Comment
