    CA Public Pensions in AZ

For those with a pension from a CA public agency who have moved to AZ:

I'm guessing you had to notify your retirement board/system that you moved so that they would no longer take CA state taxes from your check?

It's my understanding that AZ will tax your pension, albeit at a much lower rate. When do they collect...at the end of the year? How much lower did you save in state taxes by moving to AZ from CA?

How much you saving on Property Taxes?

What about car registration...no doubt lower than CA. I understand you can choose a one year or five year registration?

    Thanks.

FWIW Idaho just lets me pay the taxes when I file in the next year. Basically you pay in the rears as they say. No quarterly and/or estimated taxes paid throughout the year. How did I figure this out.....I called the State Tax People. I forget what they are called exactly....it's not the Franchise Tax Board like in the DPRK...
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

Yes, I was told to contact my retirement system if I move out of State. This way they could pay/withhold taxes for that State. Don't know when they pay it?

Moving from CA to AZ, I'd save about $2000 a year in State income tax if my calculations are correct.

There's a lot of variables with property taxes. AZ is cheaper and doesn't compute taxes the same way CA does. Based on my situation, I'd save $5000 a year. And that's for a bigger house in AZ, just not as expensive.

I've been told car insurance could be the same or more. And car Registration could be about the same. Sales tax can be more or less depending on county and city (some cities have they're own taxes on top of what the county charges).

So the savings would be in property tax, gas (about a dollar a gallon), some cost of living, and State income tax.

Medical insurance could be more though. Depending on where you're getting it and what out of State plans are offered by your provider.

And I've heard you need to break ties with CA. Any proof that they can come up with that you still live here, they'll try to get you to pay State income tax. They have a long list of things they use to claim you're still a resident.

Yes you notify your retirement system to not withhold CA tax. They should not have any part of any other states tax withholding. So they should not withold anything. It's up to you to make the payment to AZ for state income tax.

Property tax is about 2/3's less than CA. I went from $4,500 for a 1,800 sq foot house on 1/10 of an acre to 2,500 sq foot house on 7/10's of an acre Plus a 1,600 sq foot shop. My taxes are now $2,200 a year.

DMV (MVD) here in AZ is a bit less. When you buy from a dealer you pay sales tax. If you buy from a private party ZERO sales tax.

Gas cheaper by about a buck.

propane is currently in Prescott $1.70 per gallon

I buy my medical from calpers so it's the same price as it would be if I were there.

Never has a issue with CA trying to come back and try and get any tax.

My wife will be filing for her pension in the next few months. On the Calpers app there is a box to check so CA will not withhold any CA tax.

For AZ state tax I do quarterly deposits.

Also in some areas of AZ there are no smog checks required. Yavapai County where Prescott is, is one of those areas.
