    Shots Fired Inside Lakewood Station

A grand theft auto suspect assaulted and overpowered a female custody assistant in the booking area at LASD Lakewood Station. He cold cocked her while she was fingerprinting him, took her taser, and was holding her hostage. After less lethal attempts to disarm and subdue him, the watch commander authorized deputies to enter the jail booking area with firearms. The suspect was subsequently shot twice and released his hostage, but did not stop resisting. Since the hostage was no longer in danger, the force was de-escalated to less lethal and he was eventually subdued with a taser. Apparently he was shot twice in the chest and didn’t go down. He was a “quite large” Pacific Islander according to the Homicide Lieutenant giving the briefing.

Having spent many shifts in the Lakewood Watch Commander’s chair, authorizing the use of firearms in the jail/booking area is HUGE and requires immediate notification to the Division Chief and subsequently to the Sheriff himself. I can only think of one other time at Lakewood, and that was when a trainee missed a gun on a suspect in the field. When staring down a shotgun at point blank range, he gave up. I was not present when it happened. It never happened at any of the other stations I worked at during my career.

The custody assistant (non-sworn jailer) suffered a broken nose and eye socket as a result of the assault.

A deputy-involved shooting occurred inside a Lakewood sheriff's station on Friday afternoon after an arrested suspect attacked a female Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department employee who was taking his fingerprints.

That's crazy; suspect must have been crazy and/or high.. not sure what he thought he was going to gain with a Taser (or with anything, for that matter).

Hopefully the assistant makes a full recovery.

IIRC, that is what LACO Sheriffs pack. S&W M&P 9mm.

Rumor has it that it was a .45 but I can’t confirm it thru any reliable source. The .45 is optional at the individual deputy’s expense. Current issue is the M&P 9, but there are several optional pistols authorized at individual expense. My last carry gun was my H&K P2000.

One hit in the chest and one in the arm.
