Why do you want to take the course on your own dime? Most agencies send there people if they need to go to school. Corrections?

I took both the PC832 arrest and firearms on my own dime before applying anywhere. I figured it would be good practice and maybe even a good talking point during ridealongs or interviews. I still had to take it again during academy; but, because I took it ahead of time, I was better able to remember the learning domains and the kinds of questions to expect on the exam.

I'm not sure about counties, but state corrections recruits get PC832 in their academy after hire. In my "first" PC832 at the community college, we had a bunch of city lifeguards (who said they have to write citations), a couple US Forest Service ranger types, and a bunch of college kids who were taking it for Criminal Justice electives. Also, some fire department staff need to take it to apply for fire investigator.

Find your local police academy that runs the modular academy. Several offer a nights and weekends extended academy. Take the Mod 3 (the first mod) and you will have your 832 cert.

I took all of the PC832.

Took it on my own dime, never regreted it.

Lots of school safety/security ask for the PC 832 (40 hours)

I applied at a school that was paying 21.00 hr for part time safety officer with pc 832 and sb1626...the local city police dept was paying level 1 reserves 22hr...

If you keep an open mind you wont regret it.

That's fair enough. You make some great points. I wasn't trying to suggest that this is the way to get in the door with any agency - I hope it didn't sound that way. It didn't cost me much by the way of money or time; so, it was worth it for me to get some "practice". I didn't use the information as an "I know it all" talking point during ridealongs or anything like that. (Knowing it all after PC832? LOL...) Like I said, I did have to take it all over again at academy.

Thinking about it now, I think the reason it may have been a help for me is, frankly, because I'm a woman. I was asked a few times what kind of experience/classes I had and, for lack of a better phrasing, I think some officers were "glad" to know that I could shoot and had done some learning domains.
