A featureless rifle does not have a fixed mag nor is considered a fixed mag rifle.
Standard cap or high capacity magazines do not make a rifle an AW.Comment

Yeah, featureless can have high cap magazines and regular magazine release. I wanted to see what people who have made their AR a fixed magazine rifle and kept the features are doing with regard to high cap mags.Comment

Some LEOs are choosing to go the fixed magazine (AR Maglock) route and retain the standard features, which definitely has its tactical disadvantages but these are personal weapons (no dept letterhead) so they may not be using it for self defense.
The law states that any semi-auto center fired rifle or pistol with a fixed mag cannot have more than a 10 round capacity or else it is an AW. While LEOs can have high cap magazines, LEOs don't have any exemption for California AW designation/registration.
So are they keeping 10 round magazines with their non AWs.. or is it possible to register it as an AW with a lawfully owned 30/40/etc round magazine and then you can use it with high cap mags and be within the letter of the law. Not saying this is advisable, but just asking if its an option.
I also have seen some debate about official use for high cap mags, but this seems to me like it doesn't need to be strictly for official use:
32405. Section 32310 does not apply to the sale to, lending to, transfer to, purchase by, receipt of, possession of, or importation into this state of, a large-capacity magazine by a sworn peace officer, as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, or a sworn federal law enforcement officer who is authorized to carry a firearm in the course and scope of that officer’s duties.
The new law (now Stayed) banning 10+ mags for all gave an exemption to retired LEO's. Meaning retirees can keep whatever legally acquired mags they own. We no longer have "duty or off duty" weapons.
This tells me I can use any 10+ mag I own in any weapon I want (except fixed 10 rounders) including newly registered (2001-2016) BB/ Mag lock AW's that require a tool to drop the mag. I can also go under 30" in OAL once registered (bull-pups/folders) as long as I don't go under 26 inches.
These are 2 benefits of Registration. The only thing the DOJ specifically says we can't do after registration is remove the mag lock device or BB. And that may get kicked out in court one day.
Back in 2000, I got rid of a couple of rifles because I didn't want to register them. Wish I'd of registered and kept them. CA has gone to "everything is now registered", so a few more that they now call "assault weapons" is no big deal.Last edited by Dump1567; 01-22-2018, 5:58 PM.Watch & PrayComment

My understanding is that if you have an AR with an AR Maglock it is considered a fixed magazine rifle since it requires disassembly to remove the mag and isn't an AW and does not need to be registered. Is that right?
I am also reading about this current registration and it doesn't even seem like you are able to register a fixed mag AR regardless of magazine capacity.
This is what the AW law says about 10+ mags.
12276.1 (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
2.A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.Comment

Really? For the last several years I was in the one of the biggest LEO unions (CCPOA) in CA and they never once addressed any thing to do with gun laws, gun rights or ownership. All unions do is bargain contracts, raises and manage grievances. And they do NOT have any thing to do with the pensions except vote on officers. Pensions are bargained for with the employer., not the state.
Can you please give an example of your point?Last edited by Rapid Cool; 01-22-2018, 6:33 PM.Comment
