    Redundancy in Carry Authorities

I've been speaking to a few folks that are planning their well-deserved retirements and most of them appear to plan out redundancy in their carry authorities. They'll already get their retiree carry cards and will have LEOSA, but also plan on getting CCW's from the local SO.

After thinking about it, that totally makes sense. LEOSA is an annual qual and I'm assuming that each agency has different qual requirements for retirees (typically 6 or 12 months), but CCW is good for 2 years. This method basically ensures that there's no gap between carry authority when qual appointments are difficult to obtain. Combined with the potential reciprocity for CCW, it seems very sound.

Are there any active (far from retirement) folks doing this same thing? I know that non-designated RO's have to get CCW's for off-duty despite their LEOSA authority. I asked some of the federal guys and they had no idea what I was talking about. LOL

Just curious if this is common practice. I just haven't thought about it.

I've heard of this only as a redundancy. Some CCW/CHP/LTC/whatever are five years and minimum training (if required) is satisfied with successful completion of a state POST or other retried (LEO/Mil) credentials. A form, a fee, and a stamp are cheap CYA and can help where one may get close to the two year mark for HR218 and may be unable to squeeze in a re-qualification prior to the two year expiration.

I guess it would make sense if you plan on traveling multiple states in an RV or have unexpected travel due to children/grandchildren births/medical/etc or a variety of other reasons.

Some guys retire and are super active, move away, etc. Some don't travel so far and are able to re-qualify at monthly/quarterly shoots hosted by their retiring agency.

I just thought of an example for having redundancy for active folks. I have heard horror stories of former officers having to fight for medical retirement status post separation from their departments. During the interim, they lost their off-duty carry privileges until civil suits were settled.

One specific example was of a child crimes detective that had been exposed for too long (?) and developed PTSD. The agency didn't want to medically retire him or provide his retiree carry creds. He won the civil case and received medical retirement along with his retiree creds.

I guess having a CCW as redundancy for "just in case your agency screws you" isn't a bad thing. I do not know if PTSD would affect one's ability to be issued a CCW or not. I suppose it's IA specific.

I don't know of anyone that has done this either and my old departments qualification shoot is required yearly if I want it to count for LEOSA or every 2 years if I want it for CA CCW. Going to the Sheriff where I live to get a CCW license doesn't make sense.

as the laws are written today, with a CA CCW issued per PC 25650, and my retired fed. leo status I can carry on school property. (exemption in the gun free school zone act). My LEOSA cred. does NOT allow me that exemption. Having a kid in third grade, I will be keeping both creds. for awhile.

Welp, I had my ccw prior to getting hired on the job and am still active. Now I do both qualify and decided to maintain my ca ccw.
