Exception to using FFL to gift to a LEO

I can't think of any, but is there any exception/exemption to needing to make a transfer of an old single shot gun to a California LEO through an FFL? This was a pure gift with absolutely no consideration of any kind. Assume someone was turning in a wall hanger at a station and an officer asked if he could have it and so it wasn't actually turned in for destruction.

AFAIK...
No FFL required exemptions only applies to LE agency transferring service firearms to one of their LEOs [PC 26610] and to retiring LEOs acquiring service firearms from their LE agency [PC 26615].

Thanks guys. I can imagine the trouble an officer could find themselves in, but what about the civilian who only wanted to do the right thing. He could have sold the gun for a few bucks, but didn't want to put a cheap gun out on the streets.

We are talking about a situation in which the gun owner first called the station, followed instructions about transporting it to the station, and the officer detailed to retrieve it from the trunk of the owner's car asked if he could have it for himself.
