    A restraint question

I saw this question elsewhere but no answer.

In the field how do you restrain a 1 armed person or a person with just 1 hand?

One cuff on the arm and the other through the ear lobe.

Depending on the dress and location of the amputation, and the equipment you have on hand there are several ways to handle this.

If the amputation is high on the arm, and the suspect is either wearing a belt, or better, if you have access to a belly restraint, you can simply cuff the fully functional limb to the belt/belly restraint. If neither of this are available, a sturdy belt loop on the suspect's pants may be used.

I've seen hand amputees who have enough of a "stump" at the end of the limb that, provided the cuff is properly tightened, they can't slip it. In other cases, I've seen restraints (but never used them) that pin the amputated limb to the torso so it can't be used to strike an officer, a bystander, or otherwise injure themselves. The ones I've seen loop similar to a blood pressure cuff that has a large nylon strap attached with hook and loop surfaces to wrap around the torso securely. I've also heard of officers using a pair of ankle restraints in lieu of cuffs if the suspect has no upper limbs at all or if the conditions can't be met for the first option I described above.

Worst case scenario, the suspect is thoroughly searched on-scene and is transported unrestrained.

So, Marauder, how did you lose your arm and what crime to you plan to commit?

              Arm to leg?

I'll most likely get in trouble for this one...
