Not legal in CA because that will cause an unpleasant death to more flying bugs than just the headlight alone.

Actually, there is a standard set by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) that specifies that such a guard must not restrict the light output by more than a small percent.
I have no idea if this product has been checked for this, perhaps the spec sheet lists it?
I think it is very doubtful that you would be ticketed for such an item.

This item does fall into the category of being a farkle.
But, it really has little use unless you are in an off road riding group where the bikes ahead of you are throwing rocks in your face.

Love the word. What's it mean? Motorcycle farkle :deal From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The...

I had these before. Touratech's and almost all headlight cover products like this are advertised as "FOR OFFROAD USE ONLY" when you buy them (on the box). If you're street riding, there's almost no use for them. Personally I'm not a fan myself of restricting lighting on my bike when riding on road, drivers have a hard time seeing us to begin with. The "for offroad use only" should be a hint about legality on the street.

it would make it harder to clean

clean headlights can really make a diff.

My headlight on my GS1200 Adventure was fitted with the Touratech light guard. At night, it casts a beam that has a pattern showing the guard. Weird and really makes the headlight less than optimum.

              Just my two cents!
