    LAPD filing a report

A question about filing a report with LAPD. Someone struck my car this morning while I was parked and drove off. I called the non emergency number when it happened but told them I didn't have any information on the vehicle and was told to call the Hollywood community station to file the report. After I hung up I realized that I had caught the car on my dash cam. I have a clear picture of the plate (but not the actual impact).

Is Hollywood community station still the right place to report (who don't seem to answer) or should I call back to the non emergency number?

    Thanks

Just walk into the station with a photo and make the report. There is no at scene investigation necessary with a property damage only hit and run.

Thank you so much. One follow up question, can I make the report at a different station?

Doesn't matter where in LA you make the report. They will do nothing with it. Keep a copy for your insurance company when you make a claim. They may pursue the other driver for losses, assuming he even has insurance.

You can walk into the front desk of any LAPD station.

I would not expect LAPD to take any meaningful action on the report. There's not much in the way of investigative resources dedicated to the investigation of minor offenses.

The license plate may easily identify the registered owner of the vehicle shown on the video. But then, there is no law violated by being the registered owner of a vehicle in the vicinity of a collision.

Have you tried online reporting or do they not have that?

In cases like this, the reason for filing the report is more about satisfying your insurance company than actually getting justice served. Sometimes people get caught for hit-and-run, but more often than not, they don't.

As far as the claim is concerned, most often, they just want a report/incident number. Thoroughness of the investigation isn't usually a prerequisite.

My $.02 is to file the report, get an report/incident number and call your insurance. Let them know you may have the person who hit your car on video as they may be able to find out if he/she has filed a claim with their insurance company (if they have one). That way, they might be able to talk to the other company about the claim. Odds are, nothing will come of it, but if you have decent insurance, your premiums likely won't jump.

After the initial officer takes the report nobody except the insurance company will ever look at it again.

I would file a claim with you insurance and call it a day, if the damage is worth the deductable.

I've been on both ends of the stick. My personal truck was hit and damaged pretty bad a year ago. No suspect info, why bother with a report it wont go anywhere.

Someone or you camera can ID the vehicle but not the driver. It still will not go anywhere unless the registered owner is honest. In your case though you said the dash cam caught the plate, did it actually record the crash? Most 20002's I've taken the car gets reported stolen after the time of the crash and the RO has some type of excuse and alibi. Or they just flat out do not cooperate. By no means am I saying if YOU want a report request a report but if it is your insurance company pushing you for it I wouldn't bother. Make them do what you pay them to do. Give them that plate maybe they can do something with it.
