A few weeks ago I bought used car from PP in Oceanside for #1 son to use for work. On Craigslist seller stated clear title, owned for 5yrs. We agreed to meet. Seller introduced himself as "Logan", had title, signed on release line but not dated, with no Release of Liability attachment, and address in Norcal. Asked about title, he said recent purchase fell through. Asked about address, he said just moved. Odd, but car was cheap, in decent condition, and son needed a ride. I asked "Logan" to complete title info, mileage info. He complied, signed & printed name. We parted ways but not before I took a covert snapshot of license plate on vehicle he left in.
Arrive AAA for transfer paperwork, they said there was "a release of liability lock" on DMV records, not registered owner, and could not process title. Subsequent calls/texts to "Logan" went unanswered.
Researched title info, found number, called, asked for Logan. Logan's mom was very helpful, said she wasn't currently living there but would contact her to call me. The real Logan called and said she had sold the car to "Steve" a few days earlier in Oceanside and gave me the address. She said Steve had asked her not to date title, he would do it later. She reluctantly agreed.
Contacted Oceanside PD and explained above. They referred me to San Diego Sheriff (I'm in Fallbrook). Deputy arrived and politely listened. He stated there wasn't enough to investigate criminal action, mostly because title was not properly completed during earlier transaction. I asked about "Steve" or whoever it was impersonating Logan, told him I had "Steve's" address in Oceanside and vehicle plate pic. He wasn't interested in following that up, said it was a civil matter.
Eventually worked things out with DMV (long story itself) and realize this isn't ten most wanted list material, but seems like LE should have been interested in Steve.?.
