Just got denied by San Diego Sheriff's office at the orientation. I filled out the background packet and there must've been something that got me the boot. My question is, LEOs out there, should I continue to apply to other agencies or is not worth it since I'll likely be denied for whatever reason I was denied here. I still have my GI bill my thoughts are to finish my degree and reapply then, so there is some time built between whichever incident(s) caused them to not continue the process with me. I am crushed, and heartbroken but I will not quit. I am just looking for advice maybe from some who have been in my position.

I know the feeling. I have been in your exact shoes and got dq from one agency for absolute BS. I applied at a different agency and got picked up and couldn't have been happier with how things ended up. To sum it up, life doesn't always go as planned and it usually ends up for the better. Fight and press on.Comment

Been denied as well. Every agency has criteria. One agency denied me for a speeding ticket within the last year. I was hired a few months later elsewhere and work with officers who lateraled away from that other agency. Moral of that last part, everything happens for a reason.Comment

Were you DQ'd or simply not advanced to the next step?
DQ'd means there is something in your packet that make you unemployable by that agency. This MAY carry from agency to agency depending on what the DQ was for but different agencies have different tolerance levels for some things.
Not being advanced is simply there were a number of 'better' qualified candidates in you pool. They advanced the top X applicants and you were X+1.
If this is the path you want to walk, keep at it. Not many people apply at one agency and get it the first time around.Comment

Burbank did not hire me, because I had applied for the citizenship only 6 months prior to the application when they required 12 months.
I did not make Long Beach PD, because they gave me maybe 600 page book to study for a week, and take the test. I worked full time and went to school full time then. Of course I did not make it.
LAPD did not hire me, because I did not have the US citizenship.
I joined the USMC, got out, got my citizenship, and I am now retired from the better agency. Meanwhile, many agencies asked me after I got hired if I wanted to join them, and I said "No, thank you."
If you do not have a major disqualifying issue, keep trying.Comment

Thanks for everybody's input. I believe it is my driving record I have had three speeding tickets in the past five years. Is it best I just give it some time to cool off? The drug use I had was experimental and 6 years ago, marijuana and rave drugs. I'm not going to quit. Thank you everyone for your responses and support.
Edit: they didn't say I was disqualified, the BI who took me outside told me that they were not going to continue the hiring process with me and to wait at least a year.Last edited by Big Korea; 05-25-2017, 5:41 PM.Comment

i'll second the keep trying motion. I got hired by an agency, then fired about 5 weeks into the academy (long story, but it was completely my bad). And no I didn't resign in lieu of, i was straight up fired. Went back to the drawing board, gathered my pride back slowly, after eating quite of bit of humble pie, and put myself through the academy. I then proceeded to get passed over by many agencies, undoubtedly due to my tainted history. I eventually ended up at an awesome agency and looking back, i would have been miserable at the agency that originally hired me. Like some have said, sometimes things happen for a reason.Comment

Keep at it. In the meantime, finish your degree, stay away from any drugs, never drink and drive, and watch your driving in general. A DUI is a 10 year non-hire for LA County Sheriff's Department. Traffic tickets can also be an obstacle.
Best of luck to you.LASD Retired

Rave drugs might be the problem. Some agencies have a zero tolerance life time use on disassociative/hallucinogen drugsOriginally posted by pullnshoot25I would love to have a hole cut in the ceiling so I could pop out and BAM!
