Here's what I can remember after 25 years.

I got the call that night of the riots for activation and headed to Los Al. Slept at Los Al and waited for the rest of the Unit to show-up.

We waited for ammo to be flown in from Northern CA and we're finally issued 40 rounds each.

CHP from all over also staged at Los Al, eventually running security for the FD (saw a lot on Mini-14's with the chipies)

Finally deployed in the afternoon of the second day. We had Hmvees and an LASD code 3 escort to the City (don't remember where).

When we got there, the city was jumping. Buildings on fire, people and News everywhere, and cars speeding up and down streets (including LAPD). The above photo I posted was taken during this time. Also someone who was out taking pictures pulled up to us. He had been shot in the arm by some bangers. We patched him up and I think and ambulance took him away.

The next day we deployed to a vacant lot down the street from Newton division.

I was in an MP unit. A lot of my fellow Guardsman were cops who would have been on the streets with their Agencies if they hadn't been activated. Also a lot of security/ want a bees/ reserves/ ex-cops, etc. So we had no problem working with LAPD. We went out in caravans of Hummers and LAPD units. Basically worked patrol for the first few days. And than just did security details as things cooled down.

Can't speak on how things worked with regular Guard or the Marine units.

After about 3 weeks we came home.

40 rounds! Thats about the same story I heard too. I heard it was a huge cluster****. Basically x2 20 round mags. Including the one in the M16.

I think I remember some of the National Guard having to shoot and kill someone trying to run them over. I'm surprised the death toll was not higher during the riots.

Have any of you read Chief Vernon's book L.A. Justice: Lessons from the Firestorm and if so what do you think about what he said that one of the reasons for letting the rioting get to the level that it did was to have justification to remove civil service protection from Chief Gates?

Thank you for your service and sharing valuable pictures. I was recent immigrant kid back then and was surprised how crazy things happen in LA. I thanked God I was in OC.

Yes Lt Mike Moulin who was the officer in charge of the station responsible for the Florence and Normandie intersection was forced out by Gates. Lt. Moulin wisely ordered his officers out of the area as they where taking rocks and bottles from a angry mob and did not have riot gear. However once he set up a command post, and watched the live feed from news copters, he refused to allow his officers to go back in (although most of them wanted to). He watched the Reginald Denny beating live and later commented "It was like a war. Bad things happen in war." Obviously Lt Moulin never served in the military. (I refer to Macus Latrell among others). If that had been an LA police officer being beaten he would have sent officers back in. His inaction and disregard for the lives of mere citizens was appalling. Those where the reasons Gates had him sacked, not to make him a fall guy as Moulin continues to claim to this day.

I remember they only showed Latasha harlins getting shot in the back, and didn't show when Latasha punched the lady 3 times and knocked her down. I actually didn't see the punching part until years later on youtube.

Of course the Korean lady should have gone to jail, but Koreans were a sacrificial lamb, the way the media portrayed it over and over only the latter part, making it seem like a racist shooting, instead of an idiotic shooting out of anger.

The Chandler Family is the most anti-LA family in the history of LA. They're pieces of f-cking sh-t.
Only one of the documentaries included the fact that 5 Korean shop owner had been robbed and murdered in the prior 12 month.

Absolutely amazing set of pictures, they really do tell a tale. But I fear this is also a warning of the future.
