    Moonlighting

So in my talks with many other LEOs from different agencies, the consensus says that working security/PI work off-duty is against policy unless you're hired out through your agency.

Other than standard departmental overtime, do any LEOs moonlight in other areas of the work world?

I understand that most agencies are paid well enough that minus a little OT here and there, the extra funds from moonlights isn't needed.

There's a few guys I know that do simple stuff like metal work but it's mostly to keep them busy on their days off. Our restrictions are pretty tight on what jobs you can get and it has to be approved by both the chief and HR.

I have known LEO who worked plenty of jobs outside of law enforcement and off duty. They come from other types of professional career prior to being a cop such as lawyers, wealthy successful business owners, stock brokers, mechanics, pilots, computer software programmers and real estate etc... using there past skill and degrees, they have two incomes and is common.

We are allowed to do security work off duty. I do personal protection for a well known celebrity during appearances. Another one of our officers died the same for a very A list celebrity.

My department policy that I understood was that you can work up to 24 hours, and you cannot work at an establishment which the liquor was the primary business. Working at the places like bars and liquor stores were banned.

I know plenty of LEOs from my agency work as a personal guard for celebrities and other "important" persons.

I know that if you work for a state agency, you wouldn't be able to work for CALExpo PD or even during seasonal events. I was advised that CEPD would be mandated to pay at the OT rate for currently employed state LEOs so they opted to not accept those applicants.

I'm pretty sure that this is different for non-state level LEOs as there are seasonal folks from local PDs and SOs that work there. This is a different scenario than what you are asking, but I found it interesting.

I work as an instructor at a junior college teaching LE related courses.

I recently got a PT offer to work for another agency and my work and that shop have been arguing about if it's allowed or not.

We don't have any rules against it as long as we aren't using a certification achieved through my agency as credentials for the job. Also not allowed to use the fact I'm an LEO as a means to advertise for draw clients for any outside work.

With a bachelors and 5 years experience as a LEO, most community colleges or private colleges will hire you to teach criminal justice classes. I taught for 7 years and had to stop when I promoted. Not against policy, just dont have the time to do it. Once I retire I will teach part time to earn vacation money.

Now you will need to take the POST Academy Instructors Certification Course (AICC) to teach POST content (e.g. academies, PC832 etc.). It is a good class that deals with adult learning concepts, I enjoyed it when I took it at Golden West.
