Seeking Info About LASD Reserve Program

    Evening all,
For awhile now I have been playing with the idea of applying to the LASD reserve program. I'm a general contractor, make my own hours and since getting out of the Marine Corps reserves back in '98 have missed the comradery and service. My questions...
-Approximately how long is the initial process from orientation to starting/finishing Module III POST?
-Approximately how long would it take to obtain level I-D from level III? I plan on gaining as much training/experience as possible.
-Is it possible to transfer to a full-time deputy from the reserve program?

Thanks for any and all info....

Going full time would require you to go thru the full time academy. Experience as a reserve helps.

Ron, unless i'm mistaken; a reserve officer must now complete a full basic P.O.S.T. certified academy either all at once or in modular format. Therefore I would think retraining would not required to go fulltime.

With LASD, you'd have to go back to a full time academy like everyone else on the dept.

I went thru LASD's last Module D (now Level 1 non designated) part time Academy in the late '90s. I would advise going through a full time intensive academy if you've been through a military boot camp. You will not be challenged nor will you get the personal satisfaction of having completed an intensive (Stress) law enforcement training academy program, if you do a part time three weekdays/one weekend per week program. If you plan on being a one man patrol unit..seek full time cert ification same as a full time officer.

            Just my .02 cents

Also, consider the fact that many agencies will not accept a modular academy for its full-time cops. Shoot, some places won't accept certain academies at all. When I was at OCSD, we would not accept laterals from certain local academies. We made a CHP officer go through the academy again, but that was justified. They aren't real cops anyway. 😬

                  I highly recommend Rio Hondo.

I recommend you get hired and have the agency that hired you put you through the academy. ...and get paid for it as well.

And that would be an agency policy, not a P.O.S.T. requirement. Any California P.O.S.T. certified, designated level one reserve officer or reserve deputy sheriff can be appointed as full time peace officer without having to re-attend a full academy. The COP or Sheriff has that authority but most I imagine wouldn't do it.

As to your last post, why anyone would go though all the trouble of a full academy (or modular format) just to be a reserve makes no sense. You're absolutely correct, go full time and retire with good pension!

Not no more, OCSD is hurting for bodies, like everyone else, and they're taking laterals and not requiring to go through their academy. Not only are they taking laterals, they are expediting their backgrounds and starting them off at a more competitive salary.

A reserve friend of mine is an executive in banking and makes more than the Sheriff so why would he go work in a jail. Reserve cops are a noble calling.

I doubt in a graduating class if half ever got a pension. More things are important in life. And law enforcement is not a career for everybody. JMHO, YMMV

I was a Marine too and the camaraderie you had in the Corps will never be match in CA law enforcement. JMHO
