    Question about LEO registration issue

So a coworker of mine, also an LEO, bought an AR for work (Feb 16) after getting the signed letter from admin and has since qualified with it a couple times and has been carrying it on duty. Got wind from the office that it was not registered. Called DOJ and was given run around. Finally gets ahold of someone who says just get another signed letter from the admin and they'll start the process over again with the $20 fee. While waiting on the letter he hears word from the DOJ that says he can now either surrender the rifle or make it non operable.

He submitted all of his paperwork but somewhere it was lost along the way it sounds like. He's kicking himself for not sending his paperwork certified mail.

I'm not going to act like I know all but I try to stay on top of all the laws. I'm at a loss here. Is this his only option?

Could he surrender it to an ffl with a dangerous weapons permit. Maybe same place he bought it. Then do the paperwork again with a letter and register it this time?

I told him to call the shop where he bought it and see what they recommend. He's cleared it with our internal affairs so he doesn't get jammed up there and they're okay with it. The rangemaster is going to talk it over with him next week. He was told by the DOJ lady on the phone, who shockingly didn't seem too knowledgeable, that "surrender or make non operational" were his only options.

Not shocking to me that someone at doj was clueless.

No kidding. Also not surprising that he got 2 different answers from 2 different people supposedly doing the same job.

If he bought it from a shop they should have the letter or at least a copy. This sounds more like the shop screwed up somewhere along the line. Unless things have changed radically in the last 11 years since I bought a gun with a letter. The shop should have all the info on file to re-DROS it at their cost.

              Question about LEO registration issue

The shop leaves it up to the LEO to follow through with the DOJ RAW registration. They gave a quick rundown of the paperwork, give you an envelope and provide you with the address of where to send it.

It has nothing to do with DROS. Once the gun was released to him, he had to file specific AW paper work with DOJ. A copy of the Chief's letter, etc.

Exactly. Which he did but it was lost somewhere in transit. Now he's wondering if he's out a rifle.

Ahh Ok got, never bought a one for work, I had mine long before it became a RAW, just changed some parts to use for work when we finally got them authorized.

The store where I purchased mine told me they keep paperwork on file in case something like this happens. The sales associate told me this has happened on several occasions to LEO after they purchased an AR-15 for work. If you don't get a form from DOJ within a month of purchase acknowledging your registration, then assume they lost it.

This just happened at my agency. Except the officer never mailed paperwork. DOJ gave officer no other choice but to get rid of gun. The stripped lower was turned in for destruction.

Partner of mine just booked his DD lower due to this exact situation. Sucks but no other options.

Same exact thing happened to me on more than one...

They cashed the check that came with the packet, but I got a letter back saying that they didn't receive the packet and that I had to surrender or destroy. I just removed the uppers from the lowers and I had kept copies of everything and just resubmitted it. It took months, but I finally got the letters back from DOJ that it had been accomplished.

I have copies of those letters stashed in every safe, the file at the office, and electronically, as I don't trust DOJ even a tiny bit.
