It has been a year

Meh, 1yr, 6yrs.....It will be 14yrs. for me at the end of March. I'm joking of course, so congrats micro on the 1yr.....you too Ron. It sounds like you both are enjoying it, so keep on doing it.




If you have never been there, you will be amazed at how big the convention really is. Not only do you have the actual convention hall with hundreds of exhibitors, you have all of the conference rooms in the Venetian too. Plus, there are 1000s of people attending it each day. The only way you two are going to meet up is if you call/text each other beforehand and make arrangements to meet.

I had planned on going this year, but things didn't work out. I went the last two years and enjoyed it, despite the amount of walking involved (a little harder for me than for most). Enjoy yourself guys.

The SHOT Show is big, but believe it or not, I have come across many "friends" there. Maybe it is a small world after all.

I think I am going to Hawaii and Alaska this year, unless other things happen. Driving to Alaska without a gun through Canada...hmmm...I drove around all 48 states with my concealed pistol without a problem, but Canada may not be a good idea.

Every time we go to Hawaii. I do not want to leave.

Congrats on the first year of retirement. I keep hearing all kinds of stats about people "wasting away" after they retire. It's good to see you're taking care of yourself and doing things that even myself who only has 5 years in are jealous of.

Well I was told if you live 10 years after retirement you are getting their dime. That first 10 years is what you put in.

My friend Lenny died 28 days after retiring. Most cops do not take care of themselves. We got medical/dental from day #1 and lots of people do not use it. One buddy said he has to go to the dentist for a serious problem but he had not been to a dentist in 10+ years.

I volunteer at my department range armory once a week. I help the senior armorer with weapons repair. I enjoy it very much. That is my connection to the department.

I got SHOT show pass with prior admission record. I used to go there almost every year, and I did not have a problem getting this year's pass.

I'm a retired annuitant (RA) as well. 3 days a week. The RA money comes in handy as "play" money!

The money is a big part (10-12 hour days), but the maintaining of department connection / friends is worth so much more, IMHO. I think I'd miss the camaraderie and sense of belonging if I left altogether. Love seeing old friends and newer guys and gals coming up. Plenty of squared away young guys returning from the suck and joining the department. They are such high caliber people and give me great hope.

Today marks my first anniversary..

I still stay active. At least I go to the dept range to help the armorer to fix guns and do other things once a week. Take my wife out to lunch within a day's driving distance..I may get a job soon. Not that I need it, but, it will be a good thing to do something and make some extra money to pay off my house early.

Hell, if you lived in a less expensive area, it would have been paid off 10 years before you retired, and your next two homes paid off 6 years after retiring. The upside is you;ll make a small fortune if/when you decide to sell that LA property.

When I was traveling, I checked the prices in WV. 2,000 sf home on 2 acres was $100,000 with yearly property tax of $900. I could totally afford it no problem, but she did not want to move. I am stuck in So. Cal.

Congrats Micro!! It's been 4.5 for me and 3 for the wife. There is a ton of life to live on this side of the tin. Keep your mind and body moving and live to see many more years of the good life!!

6 for me. I've had a blast. I spend time with my son in Colorado, my daughter and grand children in Arizona, I do more shooting now (including a bunch of trips to Front Sight) than I've ever done, I've taken classes at San Diego State, I golf and I go deep sea fishing. Next I'm going to be taking some online photography courses and I want to go around San Diego County and take some cool photos.
