from a family member who was LE.

        1. you are not applying for work at disneyland. Do not expect people to be happy to see you and do not expect to be around happy & friendly people in the course of your work.

        2. don't take the anger or dislike you encounter personally. It is the badge & what it represents, not you, it's directed at.

        3. The distrust, and outright hatred you encounter is due to bad cops, people cannot tell who is a trustworthy cop vrs a bad cop. Consequently they distrust all cops generally.

        4. Never forget you are dealing with a small portion of the populace, the majority of people out there are not the kind of people you will deal with in your work.

        5. karma. play it straight with people, do not screw them over and it will come back to you when you need it.

          Disagree with #3 above.

"bad cops" is just a small part of it. Bigger parts include poor upbringing, lack of morals/values, refusal to take responsibility for one's own actions, blindly believing everything one sees/hears from the media, ignorance of LE work, and/or basically being a piece of sh1t, etc...

Nope. #2 & #3 are two different groups of people. Lack of morals, refusal to be responsible for one's actions....etc. Those are called criminals & fit under #2.
They hate the cops because of what that badge represents. Arrest & responsibility for one's actions.

#3 is clear, people do not have a choice in what kind of police officer they will have interaction with. Unlike doctors, attorneys, plumbers, car mechanics, etc, there is no way for the average individual to review the job performance of the individual with the badge who's just showed up and decide if this is an individual they wish to interact with.
Who shows up is what they get and all it takes is one bad cop and the results can be catastrophic.
It is why the argument of "there's bad apples in every profession" is invalid regarding LE.
Any private profession, doctor, attorney, plumber, etc, that individual's job performance can be reviewed prior to interacting with them & an individual can decide based on that to hire them or interact with them. Or at any time during an interaction with them fire them or otherwise end any contact with them if an individual does not like what they're doing.
Ever heard of people getting a 'second opinion' when it comes to doctors?

There is no such option when it comes to LE.

Consequently nowadays people increasingly view LE with distrust as there is no way to differentiate between a trustworthy police officer and a bad cop until it's too late for the average individual.
The family member who was LE saw too many cops make the mistake of becoming bitter over this distrust and it affecting thier view of the public and how they then treat the public.

Thanks for the sermon, I had no idea how law enforcement worked, thanks for enlightening me */sarcasm/*

Your lifetimes worth of interaction with LEOs is what, an hour? Two tops? And you've got it all figured out and clearly have a better grasp on the situation than officers with hundreds of thousands of hours in uniform, interacting with tens of thousands of people from all aspects of society?

You are flat wrong regarding #3. I'm always amused at a violator irate at another officer, and when I get involved (as a non arresting/citing officer) and explain the same thing in the same manner, I get thank you and compliments. I said the same damn thing, why the change? Because the officer who is citing them represents consequences, and instead of owning their behavior, it's easier on their ego to blame the officer than themselves.

Not to mention, I don't recall ever getting to pick and choose what firefighters respond to my house fire. Or in the ER, can't say the nurses ever let me pick my doctor. In fact, despite the fact doctors kill way more people than cops, all I know about that guy with the stethoscope is what's on his name badge.

You mean like.... speaking with officers supervisor, that kind of second opinion? You mean all those people that demanded (and did)speak to my supervisor on scene, I could have told them that option doesn't exist? That would have been nice to know.

this arrogant condescension is a valid response why? answer: not.

I called you out on your blatant fallacies, and your only comeback is it's "not a valid response". Thanks for proving my point.

The irony is your original claim is incredibly condescending and arrogant. And sadly your're so enamored with your own brilliance that you'll never see it.

is that entire thread, of which you'll see the same responses in regard to the topic on several different firearms forums, a good illustration of the simple truth of why ordinary people have a distrust of LE? Especially in the light of the truth I posed as to why?

                            yes or no?

I noticed you very carefully skirted around answering the simple question that posed.

Stating the truth and offering an example of it is not arrogance, it is simply stating the truth of thing. which evidently you cannot handle due to the ignorance of your arrogance.

Neither did you honestly address the specific difference I laid out between the hatred of cops vrs distrust of them of which there is a bonafide truth as to the why of that.

you had your chance, you lose, I win.

Wil-c, you're stating opinion (second or even third hand opinion at that) as fact; that is your flaw. Not that your opinion doesn't matter, however, it pales in comparison to someone who has had 25+ years of Law Enforcement experience.

You're also going off of an OT thread as fact where a strong majority is quite anti-LE? Come on.
