Registered Assault Weapon and hiring process questions.

I'm currently in the hiring process; I just received confirmation in passing my oral interview with a Dept. and awaiting the begin the Background process. I'm also wanting to keep my options open and I really want to be a LEO so I'll be applying to a few other places. With that said, combined with new laws coming into play next year such as a bullet button now being recognized as a assault feature. I consider just registering my rifle as a RAW I only have two; not really looking to go featureless but will if I have to and my rifles aren't AR platform so the BB reloaded isn't going to work either. Now the question is during the application and PHQ/S they ask if you have any "assault weapons" no specification wether registered or not. Could there be a potential problem or red flag that keeps me from getting hired since I have one, two or x number of RAW? Or the house I live in has a lot of RAWs since I live with family?

I assume it wouldn't since it's a statewide thing were you register, go featureless/ other form of compliance or you transfer your rifles out of state/ move out of state. Though I do want to know what you guys think.

    Thanks,
    Nate

Now given I am not a LEO, however I am a fireman, and our background process is very similar to LEOs. With that out of the way, background forms will usually have you list how many weapons you own, regardless if they are an AR, or a hunting rifle. I have never heard of them ever being so specific that they ask if they are a registered AW. The number one thing to keep in mind when applying for any public service job is to be completely honest at all times. if you are asked about owning "assault" weapons, answer the question truthfully, because I guarantee you if you lie, you will get thrown out of the process. The background checks are very vigorous and I guarantee as a LEO recruit you will have a polygraph test at the end of backgrounds, so keeping your integrity, and staying honest is imperative. I wouldn't sweat any of this, as long as your a legal gun owner who is doing everything the right way, and you answer truthfully to everything they ask of you, it shouldn't be any means of disqualification. hope this helps, and good luck with getting hired!

I just went through the hiring process (successfully, I'm hired and have an Academy start date), and was never asked on any of the history packets or by my BI about guns. I'm sure it came up when they ran my background because I've bought and sold quite a few guns in the past couple years, but I was never asked about it.

When I did my background for State Game Warden in 2002 they specifically asked about assault Weapons in the background questions. In the Academy my
Lieutenant knew exactly what I had registered .

I was asked to name all the firearms I own. I was then asked if I own any assault weapons. I said no, and the BI responded "what about the AR-15?"

I explained it was not an assault weapon and broke it down why.

Moral of my long winded story, just be detailed when you talk to the BI if you feel something needs to be explained clearly, take the time to do so.

The CHP is hiring, and I've never heard of this topic coming up during the interview process.

When I applied in 1980s, I did not have to list any firearm, and they did not question about it. I just told them that I am a competitive shooter and won several medals and trophies. They came to my house and confirmed it, and I have never had a problem during the process. i still have a copy of my application and can double check it.

However, it was over 30 years ago and I am retired now. I don't know how the process works now.

I can confirm this. Questions about both firearms owned and RAWs.

Your firearm as it is listed now, is not an assault weapon so you can say no safely and without lying or omitting.

If you fill out the form after you've registered it as such, just tell them yes you own two assault weapons and they're registered.

No one is going to care how you answer, only that you answer honestly and without trying to skirt the question.

When I got picked up as a reserve there was a space on my in-house questionnaire that asked about all fire arms owned. IIRC it asked for serial number, make, model and caliber. The only thing that came of it was a lengthy conversation with my B.I. about my M1 Garand.

I didn't own and AR's at the time so it might be interesting to see what happens as I start the hiring process all over again to try to go full time.

Did you do the modular academy? I'm interested in doing something like that. I'm going to start going to school in mid-January; I was looking to attend the modular class offered at College of San Mateo but it's in hideous at the moment. The closes class is in Santa Rosa. Any info is appreciated.
