    LEO / CCW ammo question

I am not LEO, but I do have my CCW issued by SBSD. What duty ammo is used by SBSD or surrounding agencies? I read I should ask what local agencies are using and try to obtain the same. I know that the odds of actually having to use my firearm to defend myself or my family are extremely low. If it were to occur, liability wise, in my defense I am using the same or similar ammo that local agencies are using. Is this a legitimate question or does this seem illogical?

    Thanks

In Northern California, we are issued Winchester Ranger T. Seems to be a common handgun duty round.

I believe the only liability you will incur is if it was a justified shoot. That, and don't shoot someone with Drangon's breath.

      Thanks for the response.
I have read that the Ranger T is a great round, but as far as I can tell only LEOs can order it. I was able to purchase the Gold Dot 124g +p. It should arrive next week.

        Gold Dots are good.

My department uses Federal across the board. Specifically, the HST LE. Great round.

Nothing wrong with Gold Dot. That's what I load in my wife's .38

I use Winchester T-series in all my 9mm pistols.

Any good JHP will do. I prefer the 147 grain, but 124 grain works well.

Whatever you end up with make sure you run enough through your weapon to be sure of reliable operation.

              LEO / CCW ammo question

Speer Gold Dot .357 JHP most expensive round I've ever been issued.

They bill it as the best man stopper without over penetration.

Check this out. They have 380, 9mm, 40 and 45 currently but from the website they appear to be planning to add more.

OP I think you'll find that most agencies buy ammo off of the state contract, or a contracted price from a larger local agency. As a former rangemaster who was tasked with ammo purchases, I can state that the money allocated by the city and admin was not nearly what we would have liked to have for ammo. So you do the best you can with what you get. That usually means get what is good and inexpensive.

I wouldnt put too much emphasis on carrying exactly what the police carry. just get some reliable hollow point ammo. Alot of depts use different ammo, fwiw we use federal HST.

Also, don't forget, whatever ammo you do choose, to run a few hundred rounds though the pipe at the range to both make sure you know how the round behaves, and ensure your gun doesn't have FTF problems with said round.

Both departments I've worked at used Winchester Ranger T-series. I've ordered it online with no mention of my status as a LEO.

Thank you all for your responses. I purchased 100 rounds and I will verify reliability between the gold dots and my pistol, then purchase more if every thing runs smooth.

OP - This is the most important factor.

                            SBSD issues Winchester Ranger-T.

I'm not LEO, but I wanted to add one point as an instructor. Put ID numbers on all of your magazines Sharpie or label maker on the bottom, and use a spreadsheet to keep track of what feeds using what magazine through which firearm. You may spot some trends.

I found two bad magazines this way!
