Help needed: Police report for missing person

This is a cross post from the Off Topic section, I'm hoping some LEO can give me some advice on this:

My wife has a cousin who was living in Southern California, LA area. This cousin came to US alone and her parents are still in Hong Kong. She married this Asian guy and was divorced about a year ago and that's when things got weird.

Since then, nobody in her family has heard from her. Her parents reach out to her now ex-husband but he told them she refuses to contact them, even when they told him her father is in hospital.

They've also tried the usual social media stuff such as Facebook and LinkedIn, no response from her.

There is some concern now that something bad might have happened to her and the ex-husband isn't telling the truth. I want to check with Calguns if her parents, living in Hong Kong, can make a police report in LA for their missing daughter? Any recommendations on how to proceed with this?

    Thanks.

Get all of her information (name/Dob/ss #/cal op/last known address/ names of friends) and call the police. What was her last known address?

Anyone can report anyone missing so you can call as well.

Have your wife file a missing person report with ANY PD or SO. Do this today.

Search Intellius. Look for names that are unfamiliar to you and search for them on social media.

        Contact ICE.

See what a Consulate can share with you.

        Search classmates.com

        Search online dating sites.

Search municipal and superior court records. See if there are arrests and/or court dispositions after the date she went missing.

Contact every hospital. Every Coroner's office.

Did she personally state she was divorced or just thinking about it?

The Missing and Unidentified Persons Section in the California Department of Justice assists law enforcement and criminal justice agencies in locating missing persons and identifying unknown live and deceased persons through the comparison of physical characteristics, fingerprints and dental/body X-rays. Was she going to ANY kind of school? You would be very surprised to find out that a lot of fly by night vocational schools engage in human trafficking.

Although you can make a report with any police department, making the report with any agency other that the one where the person resided or went missing results in a delay in the investigation as the agency that takes the report will just end up having to forward the info to the agency where the missing person was last known to reside. In this situation, it would be best for the OP's wife to make a report with the agency where the missing person was last known to reside.

I agree, and I should have stated that. My fault.

If she is a citizen of another country, contact the embassy or consulate of the country she is a citizen. They have contacts with law enforcement, media, and State Department.

You will get the best mileage that way. Good luck.

Filing a "missing person" report does little more than put them in the system as missing. unless there are substantial unique circumstances, no one will go out searching for her.

                ^^^THIS^^^^

The unfortunate fact is that absent any indications that the missing person is under some risk factors beyond the simple fact that they're missing (like being very young, mentally disabled, etc.) most agencies will simply enter a missing person into the NCIC system and then wait for a contact report. There is normally no dedicated investigative effort beyond any immediately apparent investigative leads.

Thanks guys, wife's cousin has a green card, we think so but not 100% sure. She should have one when she married that guy and got it that way.

My wife is in Hong Kong right now with her cousin's parents, I'll have her make the recommendation to them to file a police report.

The only link seems to be from her now ex-husband, hopefully the police will check on him and perhaps do a welfare check to make sure she is really ok?
