    Good POST training?

So my shift sgt. is encouraging us to ask for as much training as we want. I've already completed Fresno's Rangemaster course, and I just finished a 40-hr Interview/Interrogation course. I'll be going to 11550 H&S class next month and FTO school sometime this year.

What are some valuable POST training courses that have helped your patrol skills? What courses have made you a much more valuable asset to your dept?

CA DOJ has some good trainings. You can check their website.

I took an Officer Survival training by DOJ for one week in San Luis Obispo and it was good. I took some LE armorer courses at the Lassen College in Susanville. They are POST classes also. Many other larger agencies host many POST classes. You can check with LAPD and LASD or other agencies.

      Was it this?

Excellent class and highly recommended. There's another more advanced class (lots more shooting) I'm trying to get sent to once my personal life clears up a little bit and I can make time to be out of town for a week. Thursday night street fair in SLO is good too while you're downtown.

OP Check the CNOA website as well. Also get a buddy in your agency's training bureau and get in his ear. My agency is good about accommodating folks with training requests.

      Good luck.

I've been eyeballing this class. I got a green light to take it if I wanted to.

DRE school for me. I knew the basics but after completing this course I feel like a real doper

That looks kind of like it. It was in late 1990s and I don't remember exactly what the title of the class was.

Force instructor school, chemical agents instructor school, firearms instructor school are my recommendations. If you are trained to train then you can benefit your department and ultimately, your community.

Where do you want your career to go? Don't just think about the next few years on patrol but start positioning yourself for the next assignment.

Try CNOA ( California Narcotic Officers' Association) a lot of good classes on S/W.

You should focus on where you want to be in 20 years. Captain or salty patrolman.

I loved being an FTO (7+ years) and all the street stuff but that does not get you to Executive level. If you'll be patrol guy and already did Rangemaster you should think about Thunder Mountain or Gunsite.

DRE is (or "was") great' before dope was a misdemeanor. But it's still a good class. Also, Analytical Interviewing was a worthwhile class.

Of course, any class you can find that trains with a belt fed machine gun and hand grenades would be a "career survival" course as well. The POST commission informs me every year however, that they don't feel that type of course would be beneficial.

Some friends took that course awhile back and they loved it... if all works out I would like to go this coming year.

OP, a fun course with some practical applications would be lockpicking... I am not sure if any are POST approved but a one or two day course would be worth your time.
