    HR-218 Qualifications

I went and qualified this morning, and they wrote down the serial numbers of the three guns I shot with to keep on file. Anyone's agency doing this as well, or trying to limit how many guns you can qualify with?

It seems like every year that I qualify they do it differently. Maybe it's just an issue being a large agency and having a lot of different instructors that do the quals?

The instructor I had today seemed to think we fall under the same conditions of the regular CCW's they issue. It seems like HR-218 is not fully understood, at least not at my agency.

My agency does it. Being on range staff, I've said numerous times it's not necessary, to no avail. The issue comes up when we get retirees coming in with 10-15 guns to qual with (seriously).

Thanks for the info. I did not want to get into a debate on the range, so I just let it go. I might mention to someone still active to see if they can talk to the guys at the range.

10-15 Guns? I thought I was crazy thinking about taking 4 with me today.

Used to do that, now it's just by type, semi-auto or revolver.

          Qualifications

Did mine in June at San Bernardino SD range. They only noted two types of weapon used in the qualifications. Semi auto and revolver. No brand, model numbers, or Calibers recorded.

It does appear as if there is not much consistency as it relates to annual 218 qualification here in California. Overall, my old department is very good as it relates to helping retirees qualify. The department E-Mails out the monthly range schedule, and both active duty and retirees shoot as their schedule permits. The department provides the ammunition, with no limit as to what kind or how many guns are used.

All officers must sign the “range log”, indicating the model, serial number and caliber of the gun used. I suspect, this is something one of the ranger master’s or folks in the training unit developed years ago and no one has given it any thought.

The wallet card shows nothing as it relates to the type of gun or caliber, only that the holder has qualified in accordance with the requirements of LEOSA and meets the standards as a qualified retired officer. I have been told that as far as the department goes, any handgun meets the standard of LEOSA, and that the department does not differentiate between revolver and pistol.

When I qualified in January, it was just semiauto and revolver..
