    It is Pretty Bad

I went to the Times Square last weekend when I was in New York. I saw a NYPD officer and try to take a picture with him. He said no pictures. Then he handed out a baseball card with him and his K-9 photo on it.

Only after I identified myself as a retired cop from CA, he said okay. He said officers are okay, then he took a picture with me. I don't know if it was a department policy or just him not taking pictures with tourists. They were armed with AR rifles, and were so many of them. The K-9 unit was a bomb detecting dog for suicide bombers.

I guess everything is pretty bad all around.

Be safe out there..I feel bad that I retired and most of you are all still working.

I'm not a LEO, but that's at least the third time I've seen you say you feel bad for retiring. Maybe you should talk to someone to get past that. I say that sincerely as someone who was on the job as a fireman for 35 years and who's wife is a retired cop.

You earned you're retirement. Enjoy it.

Micro, you served your time, and have earned your retirement. You have to have faith in those that we trained to carry on in our place, just like those that trained us.

It's a young man's game. We trained them well and they can do the job.

Maybe it will pass. Many bad things happened since I retired. Probably that is why I think that way. Hope everything goes well.

It just hurts to see many fellow brothers get killed on duty.

I saw a similar group of officers in Times Square in April. They were very open to pictures. Obviously things have happened since then, but rather sad that they are not willing to have their pictures taken now. When the public treats an employee so badly they don't want to be photographed or get that close to them society has some broken cogs.

Went to NY almost 10 years ago and had a very plesant experience with a couple of retired LEO's working security for the Today Show, Al Roker was a different story. Anyway, when They used the wand on us for security I told them I had my badge wallet in my pocket. They were supper friendly and had us come behind the rope where the production crew was it was VIP treatment.

I got to talking to the two and they both retired within 6 months of 911. They were partners assigned to the detective bureau and spent the last 6 months of their career sifting through the rubble searching for those who lost their lives. I know 911 affected all of us, but those that were in the middle of it dealing with the loss of their loved ones, family, friends, partners and coworkers really came together. The respect those two showed for other LEO was very humbling. I have never felt that kind of acceptance or appreciation from any other LEO that I have come accross since.

When I think about what the men and woman involved in 911 I think it can't possibly get any worse. Im now starting to think it can get worse and its our own country causing it. We're all dealing with the current times and it does not look like it is going to get better anytime soon.

Please watch your back, lookout for your partners and hug your loved ones every chance you get. Keep your heads up and continue providing the same service to those who need it and rely on it. This gloomy time shall pass.

How long have you been retired?

Also, I don't blame the police for not wanting pictures. The picture probably isn't the problem. It's probably that it puts the subject into the officer's "personal space". Feign wanting a picture and then bam.

We are all different and I was over it all before I even left the parking lot of the station. I did my time, they (both the citizens and dept) got more out of me than they should have. Enjoy your time to be able to work on the bucket list.

It's quite understandable that some officers who are or were assigned to sensitive positions would not want their picture taken.
For instance: picture taken, his/her name is on his uniform...he/she is now an easier target to identify. I never allowed my picture when I worked dope for obvious reasons.

Maybe you were from a small department, but in large departments you are a number. When you retire another number replaces yours.

Enjoy your retirement, because the powers that be want to take it away.

Enjoy retirement. You've earned it. Leave it to the younger folks like Ron said.

As for the photo i imagine it's probably personal preference. Some folks have no social media and would love to stay off the radar due to where they live. Others, just aren't personable that day... while others are probably a little sketchy about letting a random stranger into their personal bubble (yeah some are paranoid, but for good reason). Done probably don't like their attention diverted in a large crowded space. If you've worked in a large crowded area you understand how quickly some random dude can get close to you while your attention is diverted for a question or a something similar.

Let's hope it gets better for our brothers in blue.

I just wish everyone to stay safe. Threats against police, and attacks..It is not like old time anymore. It feels like a war zone out there.

Just a fyi; he wasn't. He, Ron-Solo and I all worked for the same dept. and it is the largest of its kind in the U.S.

Micro, I will echo Ron; you served your time and have earned your retirement. Enjoy it. I know your retirement wasn't that long ago, but there is no need to feel any guilt for being retired and not being there to help.
