memorizing codes

so how did you go about putting the codes to memory? i'm starting the 10 codes and was just wondering how you guys did it?

Don't try to memorize them by reading them.
Instead, pretend you're using them as well as being asked a question that some of them ask. Answer with an appropriate code. Maybe even rewrite the ones that are questions on a sheet. Potential answers on another.

In the academy I would make audio tapes and listen to them in the car. I did this not only for learning codes, but also for the various tests we had. It worked good for me.

Once you are on the streets, the codes will become a second language for you. You will find yourself using them in conversations off duty.

Download the scanner radio app to your phone. Listen to your local department and buy a code book. Listen and when you here a code, look it up and make out a list for yourself as you figure them out. We each learn differently, so if you listen to the codes (aural learning), look them up (visual learning) and then write them down (kinesthetic learning), you will hit all three learning styles and they will stick.

On a side note, alot of departments are going away from the use of codes because of what happened during 9/11. The feds are really pushing the "plain talk" method of communications over radio.

Excellent advice CaptMike. As a follow on, State Fish & Game is not using 10-codes either. Additionally, 10-codes are often agency-specific and if you learn one set that isn't the set your new employer uses you will be starting the process of learning them again.

Index cards/aka flash cards for adults. Listening to a scanner also helps.

Using/listening to the codes they will become second nature. But, if you're having trouble with the 10 code you don't have a prayer with vehicle, penal, health & safety, etc.

The scanner app and listening for about an hour a night got me very fluent in the codes. Some people liked flash cards but I was more of a hands on application learner in the academy.

Broadcastify is a good scanner app to check out. As others have said, 10- codes can mean different things from agency to agency and 11 codes are sometimes and sometimes used exclusively. As you listen, especially if you listen to a couple different agencies, you start to pick up the ones that generally stay consistent between agencies.

When I had to learn them, I had a cheat sheet that I would I would keep at my desk while listening to the radio. That helped a lot.

2nd the flashcards method.

Make your own flashcards - you writing everything out will help you remember it better than buying a pre-made pack.

Learn them in order by code. Learn them in order by definition. Learn them out of order (mixed up/shuffled) by code. Learn them out of order by definition. Then completely shuffle them so that they are out of order and mixed up with regards to whether a code is facing you or a definition. Then flip them around and do it the other way. Then re-shuffle/mix and repeat.
