Unless you fit into one of the narrow exempt categories of the roster, it can't be done.
Non-Roster Handgun (Unsafe Handgun) Exemptions Criminal penalties may attach to persons who sell, purchase, give, or otherwise transfer a non-roster handgun. However, there are three groups of public entities that may purchase non-roster handguns. The prerequisites for purchase, the eligibility of sworn members of the entities to purchase non-roster handguns for personal use, and the restrictions on resale vary. For complete details please see California Penal Code section 32000, et seq.

                No can do.....

Buy everything you think you might want before you retire. I spent +$300 on magazine on my way to turn in my credentials.

The day after I retired, I am not a good guy anymore. The first paperwork the department gave me when I turned in my badge and ID was a letter telling me that I am no longer a peace officer. :-(

Carry a "High Capacity Flask" much more useful and practical for retirees. We are not "on the job" any more. Priorities

You should also get used to using the term "standard capacity mags". Don't fan the flames with the liberals. There are only a handful of states that restrict round capacities.

You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

                        Why?

The stupid California legal term is "large-capacity", defined in Penal Code as "more than 10 rounds". If one stays in CA, CA legal terms apply.

Lot easier to keep in a pocket when you have to deal with the new stress retired life hands you like, "are you going clean out the garage like you promised to do, or the weeds need to be pulled in the flower beds". I really miss work some days.
