RIP Sergeant Jim Kaylor, LASD Retired

Jim Kaylor, a friend, mentor, and coworker passed away during open heart surgery.

He was an outstanding cop and was decorated for bravery by the Sheriff's Department. He was a mentor to many.

Jim was also a US Marine who served with distinction in Vietnam. Among his many awards, he earned the Silver Star. Jim was a humble man when he talked about himself, but always with confidence and pride. Rest in Peace, Brother.

Synopsis:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James N. Kaylor (2349911), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on June 7, 1968. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Lance Corporal Kaylor upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Also sorry for your loss. Jim was one of a few war heroes that we were privileged to serve with.

I thought it would be appropriate to post the full citation accompanying his Silver Star award. The earlier postings included the only a redacted version. Here's the full text:

"While serving with the Second Platoon and on security patrol near Con Thien, Private First Class Kaylor and the patrol were ambushed by approximately two companies of enemy forces. Surrounded and pinned down for four hours without communications, an order was given to charge the enemy. Although Private First Class Kaylor's grenade launcher became inoperable as the attack went forth, he drew his side arm and commenced firing on the enemy. Within a short time, all of his fellow Marines on the front lines were killed by enemy automatic weapons fire. Alone and with only three rounds of ammunition left, he called to the rear and located the only two remaining Marines. Moving into a crater which was near enough for them to supply him with grenades, he then single-handedly attacked the enemy until there was no return fire. As he and two of his comrades prepared to assault the enemy bunkers again, the remnants of the Second Platoon came on to relieve them. Private First Class Kaylor's courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."
