Does LTC/CCW Show Up on Police Database

When a police officer looks up your license plate (vehicle registered to you) or looks up your CDL on their computer system or by calling it in to dispatch, does it show that you have a CA LTC?

Many have said that since CA does not have a law requiring an LTC holder declare they are carrying (except some counties like OC that require it in their LTC terms) then one shouldn't or doesn't have to declare it unless asked.

However, if the officer sees that you have a LTC on their system or through dispatch then it would look really bad if you don't declare it and could put you in a dangerous situation.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I just can't find it in the forums when I search.

I would like to know, because if I do not have a weapon with me, I would not declare it, however, if I thought a LEO might know I have a CCW, I would not want him to be suspicious that I was withholding information.

The data bases are separate, but some agencies have added fairly simple technology to pull data from multiple sources with a single inquiry.

So, depending on where you are your CCW info might get retrieved along with your DL info. Or maybe not.

I think you will have a hard time getting a definitive answer here. While the State does maintain a number of data bases, (DMV, want and warrants, criminal history, etc.) that are available to all California Law Enforcement officers via their department’s computer system, many departments if not most/all have their own automated data base that is available to personnel on that specific department. Given that CCW’s are managed at the local level, I do not see have they could be available via a statewide system. That leaves the 58 separate county systems, and of course all of the municipal and special district police departments which could if they choose to incorporate ccw information into their own automated system. So, as noted above - - maybe.

I agree the best answer is maybe.

But also note that while CCWs are issued and managed at the (typically) county level, the Penal Code requires IAs to immediately inform the DOJ of issuances, denials, and revocations by filing a copy. Do they (DOJ) maintain that in a database, and is it accessible to LE? - good questions. The DOJ either keeps a giant file cabinet filled with these copies or they maintain them electronically, who knows...

Once they have your name it's just another query for firearms, firearms on your CCW are listed as CCW on a query and available statewide.
Same goes for the serial, it returns as CCW if it is on your license

On friday, My wife was @ the Mac Donalds drive thru and ha alittle "seisure". Local P.D. dropped her off @ home ansd told me hat the car was @ the Mac Donalds parking lot...i asked if I could get a ride to the car,,They agreed, but asked me to lift my shirt to make sure that I wasn't carrying any weapons..Officer safety ,when i asked them why, they saud that it came up on their database that I had a CCw....my 2 cents..

Think of it this way, if every agency that someone may come into contact with on a traffic stop knew that that person has a LTC, then why would IA's have the requirement to notify? Keep in mind that this is only for contact on a traffic stop, since traffic stops are the most common contact with LE.

Personally I think telling an officer during a stop is a good thing, it will really cut down on the potential for something bad happening, if there is an accidental exposure. I know that if I get stopped I'm sure as hell speaking up as soon as possible after initial contact.

but really
run plate, get name associated with plate, (or of course use name once they have your license) with that they can either manually or automatically run a firearms query, that query will result in a list of firearms (DROS'd) that you own, and the associated DROS information, any firearm that is on your CCW, has something like *****CCW***** along with it.
they will only list so many firearms and if your number exceeds that they get a little message that says 'inquire for a hard copy' or something like that.
as mentioned previously, some agencies may do that, some may not, its up to the agency and the software they use in their cars.

This is exactly the thing I was thinking about. So it makes sense to always declare even if you're not required to by law or conditions of CCW.

What City was this? Do you happen to know which police agency?

As far as running your plate or DL through the DMV system, no, I haven't seen anything like that. I have never heard of anyone being run through that particular system for firearm ownership. Only thing I can run, to my knowledge, is a firearm itself. Whether you, as the CCW, want to let me know you have a firearm is up to you, I can for the most part tell already because you display the same mannerisms as a cop does when I stop them. I appreciate when you tell me you have a CCW and are armed, but again, totally up to you.
