LEOSA plus CA CCW

My CA CCW expires this year and I also have my Federal LEOSA credential that allows concealed carry in all states. The CCW shows only 3 weapons registered that I can carry with the permit. However, the LEOSA credential allows me to carry any weapon of the type qualified with - in my case both semi-automatic and revolver.

The CA CCW seems to be recognized in certain Federal and State places where the LEOSA is not. Any retired LEOs also have their LEOSA credential plus a CA CCW? Any thoughts on just having the LEOSA as opposed to having both?

One concern of mine is what happens if I'm forced to draw and/or fire while having a firearm not listed on the CA CCW. Will that be problematic?

I don't really see a need for both. LEOSA is good in all states, and doesn't cost you the fee's associated with getting or renewing your permit, why go through the extra hassle for something you really don't need?

Now I get that when you initially got your CCW, the Air Force was probably not set to issue the LEOSA cred's. Now that you have it, I don't think you really need the other.

I can't think of any circumstance where a California issued CCW permit would allow the carrying of a concealed weapon and where LEOSA would not.

Unless someone else can cite such a circumstance, I wouldn't go through the headache and expense of obtaining a California CCW.

My retired credential is endorsed for CCW for 5 years. It does not specify a specific firearm. I double checked with my range staff, and they said no specific firearm is specified.

My LEOSA certificate does not specify a firearm either. I qualified with a pistol and revolver, and I guess I am good with any pistol or revolver.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation through its legal section, has determined that CCR 4313 exempts the following:

1) California Peace Officers who are otherwise permitted to carry firearms
2) Honorably retired California Peace Officers with concealed weapons privileges
3) Citizens with concealed firearms privileges

CCR 4313 has to do with carrying firearms in California state parks, and does not have anything to do with your original question.

Don't confuse a retired ID with CCW privileges with a standard CCW issued by local LE. The requirements are different.

The LEOSA is supposed to be all encompassing sans private party properties that specifically prohibit weapons of any kind on their property...ie: Angels Stadium, etc
