What do DMV investigators do exactly?

I was told by a family friend to apply to the DMV for an investigator position and that my background in finance would be helpful? I did a little research and they are sworn law enforcement but I'm wondering what exactly is it they do day to day and if I would need prior LE experience to be an investigator?

A finance background won't be of much help as most of what DMV investigators do is not financial related. Most of the cases they deal with are fraud of some type, and mostly involving dealerships. Think things like odometer roll backs on used cars. Joint investigations with CHP on vin switches, big vehicle theft deals, and the like.

As to what their job requirements are you can look at those at the CalJobs site when they have a posting listed.

My dad was a DMV investigator for 30 years. A lot has to do with dealerships and their sales paperwork and what was said above. There are all kinds of laws that regulate the advertising and what they can and cant do involving sales.

Interesting. Thanks for your perspective. I was under the impression dmv investigators chase after fake ids, fraud, and the like.

You should look into the CA Dept of Insurance. They like people with a background in finance or insurance.

***Edit*** Oh its you......I guess you're back?

I've never been gone? I've just been quite busy at work so I rarely post nowadays. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into the dept of insurance.
