First, you will have to pass the written test, physical, medical, psych, polygraph, and background..

Afterwards, you still have to graduate from the academy and pass the FTO phase (if you go to city police vs county deputy).

Just like good old Marine Corps.. department will issue you all the gears you need long as you are not going through the academy as self sponsored recruit.
You hit patrol yet or you still stuck in the courts/jail?

The only time where you may get to use your own is if your hired with a small rural department then you would still be restricted to what the department uses.
Your Glock 21 may be approved for off duty but that's it.
As for your rifle unless the chief issues you a letter and you register your rifle with DOJ. You want nothing to do with that program.

Im gonna go out on a limb here and assume Rogue is not a officer or never was. Most agencies at this point allow the purchase of their own weapons. Yes you will lose your weapon for a few days during the OIS investigation however they will give you something comparable until the inspection is complete. During that time you are off anyways for mandatory leave after an OIS getting your weapon back immediately is the least of your worries.

Yes, they will issue you a temporary firearm. When the firearm comes to the crime lab for an inspection/examination, the examiner will do his or her best to get it done as soon as possible. They usually finish and return it within couple of days. So, you will be without your firearm for only couple of days.

Are you even a LEO? Why are you even answering questions in this forum?
          What creds do you possess?

Have you even been an officer or do you just pretend to be one?

OK, guys, play nice. This is the LE forum, not Off Topic.

In this forum, non LE are welcome to comment (within established rules) but it is considered common courtesy to mention that you are not LE and are just trying to be helpful.

I'm retired, but spent 32+ years with LASD and a year with another agency before that. I was in more than one deputy involved shooting. Each time my gun was taken by the Homicide Detectives to the crime lab for testing. It was my personal weapon. It was returned to me within a few days each time. I had other guns, including my county issue, so I was never without a gun.

I carried several different personal guns over the years. If you take care of them, they will hold up nicely. My county issue Beretta was the only gun that ever had a scratch on it. It happened the first day of Beretta training when to pos holster we were issued kept catching the gun while drawing, and I dropped it on the concrete. It bugged me for years but the gun still fires flawlessly. It's probably got at least 30K rounds down the pipe without a jam or malfunction of any type.

Seriously rogue, you need to chill, your posts are a little out there and don't seem to have the correct info which is why I question your authenticity here. There are plenty on this board that can verify my LE status

You question my status. So I will question yours..
Why do I need to chill? You challenge me and I will challenge you.

So unless you have my creds your argument is invalid.

What information do you deem incorrect? Tell me what you think it should be..

Knock it off, Rogue and AK, you sound like guys fighting over the sand box.

Everyone here is correct to state that you should primarily be concerned with completing all the requisite steps of becoming a LEO before concerning yourself with what firearms you will carry. However, to answer your question will be dependent upon which agencies you are considering. My agency has a very liberal gun policy for handguns and a somewhat more restrictive shotgun and rifle policy.

My agency would allow you to carry your Glock 21 through the academy if you desired. There was actually a classmate of mine that did so when I went through the academy. Your M&P 15 wouldn't be allowed for carry though. My department recently disqualified any further M&P 15 use unless you had already qualified with one. My agency only allows Colt, Daniel Defense, and Bravo Company AR-15's now. You can PM if you have any further questions about firearms or becoming a police officer.

Another thing regarding the CA compliant ar-15's. I don't believe you can remove the bullet button legally and use the rifle for LEO work even with a letter. I believe you have to acquire the letter for purchase from your agency and must purchase a non-compliant ar-15 then register it. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this.
