    Holy crap

7 of the 30 sheriff's deputies in Klamath County Oregon, asked the county administrator's to put them on paid leave, fearing reprisal from the sheriff for co-operating in a DOJ investigation of the sheriff.

From what I read in the paper up there last year they don't have 24/7 patrol in most of the county now. My daughter who works as an firefighter/EMT told me all 7 are working patrol, it has to hurt having 7 patrol guys out at the same time.

How do you ask to be put on paid leave? I need to learn this trick, sounds like a great deal.

The last guy I saw make it work was a Sgt.

He did something that ticked off the Lt. and the Lt. yelled at him in front of the troops and some clients. Went out on stress leave...I'm thinking hostile workplace...and only came back after the Lt apologized to him in front of the troops

Hey Staff, I have SOOOO much dirt on you guys; can I please go out stress now?

So its probably just the media mis-reporting something or not understanding it (or just not being given enough information); but why are these 7 off duty? Move them to another assignment/put them all on one assignment together/etc.....

I don't think there is any misreporting, not all of the info is out there for the media. My daughter works closely with 2 of them, and she told me that they told her some of what was going on 2 weeks ago, it's just hitting the news now.

Moving them is probably not an option when your entire department is only 30 sworn positions. Although I think it would have been a smarter move to suspend the sheriff, then it is to strip patrol, and eventually custody to fill the patrol spots.

That doesn't really address the problem when the claim of a hostile work environment comes out of the actions of the office of the Sheriff.

The worst thing they could do would be to accept being all placed in one assignment...it would be like fish in a barrel; just nuke the whole barrel.

The smarter move, by the City Council, would have been to suspend the Sheriff and hope his buddies, still in place, are smart enough to go "hands off"

With the Sheriff being an elected official, its not as simple as suspending him. He does not take direction from the board of supervisors, He only gets funding from them. This will be fun to watch! DR

I don't know where Oregon's law is on that, but it can and has been done in Ca. SF's worthless sheriff was suspended after the DV incident, and I think there is a sheriff up north who was suspended as part of an on-going federal investigation. I think that it would have to come from the county administrator not the board anyway.

                  That is my understanding also.

The administrator would send the letter, the sheriff could appeal it to the board
