Burnt Bronze Patrol Rifle

Maybe a weird question here but I have two AR's, a Gen 4 POF 415 in burnt bronze and a Daniel Defense M4V5LW, and I am trying to choose which to go with for patrol duty. As you all probably know I only get to choose one to register as an assault weapon, so I want to choose wisely. As far as everyday patrol use the DD is probably better in that it weighs practically nothing and throwing it in and out of the car is 99.99% of how it will be used on a typical shift, but I love the POF and long to use the ambi features as they were meant to be used. The other part is that the POF is burnt bronze - am I a nut to think having a burnt bronze rifle on patrol really isn't a big deal?

Let me know your thoughts, I feel as though I can't really go wrong with either. As far as having to give up the registered lower when I retire, I'm not really worried about that because I have many years left before the big R

Buy something new for patrol. Take advantage of the opportunity to buy a non-neutered weapon.

1) I like to fly below the radar when possible; if everyone has a black rifle I would have my patrol rifle be black as well. That is just my opinion/style; if brass doesn't care then pick whatever you want.

2) As far as turning in your lower when you retire; you make the decision you think is best. I know what I would do with my legally owned property...

Why do you only get to choose one? Is it a department policy? I don't believe there is anything in the PC limiting LEOs to only owning or purchasing one AW.

Also, I'm not sure if the LEO exception for being allowed to register an AW legally allows one to manufacture that AW or, if it has to be purchased from a CA FFL with an AW permit. I'm having a hard time finding the text in the PC right now.

What I have been told (we all know about trusting second hand info, but these guys I trust) is that we can only have one AW, but because I have not seen any info with my own eyes that shows this, I can't say it is in fact the law.

And as far as manufacturing an AW, I guess there is a way you can sell it back to a FFL and then take back possession as an AW. I don't know exactly how it works but know officers who have done this with their patrol rifle.

The other thing I was just thinking about is that the POF has a brake on it that almost hurts my ears with protection and I can't fathom how loud it would be without it...

Pick the one you trust your life with the most. I'd go with the DD, if you go with the POF change out the brake to a flash hider. If and when your on an extended call your going to wish you went with the lighter weapon, if you go with the heavier POF, also if you keep the brake on and have to fire it in doors, or from your vehicle to say it will be unpleasant would be an understatement .
I can also see someone with brass saying"Hey that guy can't have a burnt bronze rifle on duty" after you have already done the kookie Cal. paperwork.

You'll have to find an ffl that has both the CA assault weapon ability AND the FFL 07, so that they can "manufacture" it.

I used the shop up in Placerville for all of mine, but they are no longer open.

Haha I know there is a lot of mixed reviews about them, but Sac County SWAT has been very happy with theirs and so have a few other guys who have put them through real world use with lots of rounds that swear by them. But I guess for my purpose having the lighter weight is better, and DD is a proven gun so what have I got to lose?

So is there a way to buy multiple AWs, or can you only have one like i was told? As I said, I never read it for myself so I would be very happy if I was wrong

Oh wow, so maybe that was just a Sac County thing where the Sheriff only authorizes one per deputy (I heard it from their range staff). I wonder what my Chief thinks... Thanks for the info!

I would go with the DD. My DD takes a beating in the trunk of my unit and handles every bit of it and has never had any problems. On top of that, go with the lightest set up you can. Nothing sucks more than standing around on a perimeter with a heavy gun.

Another quick note: my dept only allows purchases from an AW dealer. We can not take an already purchased bullet button rifle and turn that into a RAW no matter what. Additionally, we are only authorized 1 rifle letter per deputy.

Keep in mind that POF utilizes many proprietary parts. I would opt for the lighter weapon that can be easily serviced by your agency's armorer and also be easily utilized by your partner(s) should the need arises.
