Look at a Buck Redpoint Rescue. More than just a folding blade. Can be opened and closed with one hand, but primarily a right- hand system-not convenient for lefties.

I used to carry a Spyderco Police knife on my vest strap, and a Buck knife on my Sam Browne.

          1. Spyderco: Very thin.. http://www.knivesandtools.de/de/pt/-...spyderedge.htm

          2. Buck: I don't know the model but it has a blade on one end, and a spike for undoing knots on the other end.

Zero tolerance 0350, assisted opener and runs around 120-130 bucks. Ive had mine for a few years and I have no complaints. Kershawguy has the blams for around 90 sometimes.

My department regs require me to carry a folding knife. I carry a Emerson CQC-7 in my back right sapp pocket. It deploys as I retrieve it out of my pocket. I've been in several foot pursuits/fights and have yet to lose it...

I carry either my Benchmade Griptillian or (mostly) my DPx Gear HEST/F. I see cheap Big 5 knives snap all the time.

I carry two knives. A small $10 kershaw from Walmart with the specific purpose of doing utility work, opening spring locks, cutting things in a non emergency situation and engraving my equipment so other cops don't steal it.....and a CRKT Hissatsu folder for self defense. This has me a whole $70 invested into knives and the cheap kershaw sees the majority of the work.

Honestly you could substitute the Kershaw for an even cheaper blade. Walmart has no name folders for $1. Use that for all your prying needs and if you break it who cares. You could very well use a buck knife or a cold steel lawman for both duties but it will be a jack of all trades but will really lack on the self defense option. My Hissatsu has yet to see any use and really I hope it doesn't. It's double locking(don't cut yourself), non serrated(doesn't get stuck on clothes) spring assisted blade with a finger guard(don't cut yourself x2). It's about 4" which is long enough to strike vital organs if need be. It looks like a pocket samurai check it out its awesome.

Only issue I have with the police model is the weight.

I'd get an Emerson. The Commander has assisted opening with a slight hook on the knife tang, once it snags on your pant pocket it flips out. Faster than a switch blade. If you carry back pocket, the tanto is nice. These can be configure for tip up / down configuration.
They are liner lock, composite handle, and black-T coated. Stop by his company in Harbor City, he may give you a discount for LEO.
You tend to loose these since the retention is not the best with knifes. And that knee pocket tends to let things get banged up quite a bit.

I'd like to know the official policy. If you get into a fight, and result in a stabbing that would be bad publicity.
