    Dash Cams or Body Cams

An honest informational query. No discussion please.

How many LEO here use a cam or video, vehicle or on person, in their daily work ?

    - thanks

Is there any way to set up a poll on this BB ?? - fixed it.

    LEO only please - thanks

It was never there when I worked the streets in early 90s. Instead, I used a micro cassette recorder for my own use. It worked well for me.

Cameras in the cars, audio recorder on my belt. Saved me from every complaint ever filed against me because they were all lies.

Small department. No real money for cameras. Looks like there is some federal money available for this but I can't find the grant guidelines so I haven't been able to write one.

i'm not an LEO, but in my last job i sold a lot of SSD and flash storage devices for body cam and dash cam for school bus, LEO and other federal, govt and military related applications. in all honesty.. those shouldn't cost that much per cam... only reason why it's so expensive is because of certain certification and what not needed. in the end, they are all made in china and the cost of that is probably a small fraction of the cost. military related application on the other hand does cost a lot more, cuz it's more mlssion critical.

when i heard police department paying $1K+ for a body cam.. i laugh because whoever that is selling them those are ripping them off... well more like ripping off tax payers.

i for one are pro body cam and dash cam.. hell even drones is cool in my books. the way i see it is... if you are not breaking the law.. why would you worry about your vids being taken? besides its another tool to enable our LEO to protect themselves against complaints.. so why it cost that much is beyond me.

i personally thanks the officers out there keeping everyone safe... just my opinion.

Are there inexpensive body cams with a 12+ hour battery life and can withstand the elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, and also the wear and tear from impact with cars, walls and the ground that may occur during fights with arrestees, or falling off and impacting the ground during foot pursuits?

there is.. but the battery pack alone will make the form factor bigger. as for shock proof, weather proof.. that's easily done by rubber housing, conformal coating on the PCB itself, etc. those who are selling those equipment won't sell it cheap because they know it may not be a repeated business.

if there's a position in the LEO dept where i could be the technology officer.. i think i would save dept. money with my 15yrs+ experience in the SSD industry.

There are some agencies that have people in those kinds of job positions. Additionally, some of the price figures you see aren't just for the camera system itself but also data storage/management software (something very few people are talking about in regards to running body cams for everyone at any size agency).
