Once again it has happened--Monday night there were the riots in Baltimore. The Mayor- (Ahemmm!) put herself right in the middle of the decision making process and orders the Baltimore Police to "stand down". Based on her decision, BPD had to back off and watch the situation deteriorate.

Then what happened Tuesday Night? Clearly someone got ahold of the Mayor and showed her the light.---Tuesdays response by Baltimore PD was "Text Book" Riot control! The politician was removed from the equation, law enforcement was given the green light ---situation handled to successful conclusion.

Now in the days after --the NAACP is chiming in defending the mayor's decision, rather than law enforcement--

Hmmm--Shades of "Florence & Normandie - Reginald Denny" History repeats itself.

What we learned in 1992, after the initial "inaction" that resulted in chaos, was that if you go in with an overwhelming use of force and put the situation down immediately the problem can be solved more effectively. And that is exactly how LASD SEB has handled similar situations since. ---With effective results!

I am glad I did not work for an agency that answered to a mayor.

I was on a team that responded to situations involving civil unrest. Like you stated, you respond with enough force to gain control of the situation as quickly as possible. You also attempt to identify the agitators and arrest them as quickly as possible.

What happened in Baltimore was pathetic. People throwing concrete and bricks at officers and no force is used. We always had several options available, including officers with rifles if lethal force was needed. Hopefully the injured officers recover from their injuries, and maybe some type of suit against the mayor would be appropriate.

It's our fault when riots happen, it's our fault when they are put down "too aggressively," its our fault when they aren't put down aggressively enough, etc. As has already been said, politicians need to put capable leaders in place BEFORE things go bad and then trust those leaders to make the right decisions in their respective fields instead of meddling in affairs of which they know nothing.

Law Enforcement has become the public whipping child for the left. Any time that LE does their job and there are unintended consequences the politicians will drive the bus over LE.

The left used this tactic in the late 60ies and early 70ies with Armed Forces. The left still hates the Armed Forces, but realizes that open contempt and hate loses votes.

IMO, due to conflicts of interest, she should have recused herself before she ever opened her yap at press conference. Because of those same conflicts she should have not been allowed anywhere near this investigation.

I stated the same in OT, but you know how that goes with the cop haters there. She should not be the prosecutor handling this case.

I am glad I am retired. I was devastated when I was forced to medically retire from an on duty injury, but I think it was actually a blessing in disguise. I feel for you guys still on the job.

In salinas, when there was unrest, a few months ago, PD was told to ignore the folks spraying graffiti and vandalizing 'the police station' in front of them
That was actually a successful action in that things did not escalate

I hope they lose their whole department after what has been done to them from the Mayor to the State Prosecutor and the brass..

I feel sorry for all the officers on the force and am interested to see what happens at the trial for the 6 accused...
