With all the negative news regarding LE practices and encounters with the public going around lately, I felt it necessary to share a positive interaction which occurred today between a Probationer and one of my colleagues (we're Probation Officers).
We received a call from another local agency that one of my colleague's probationers was on the crest of a local bridge and threatening to jump off and end his life. My colleague and two other DPOs responded to the scene my colleague stood and talked with the subject for approximately 20 minutes. The subject was standing on the railing of the bridge outside the guardrail, just an inch away from the edge and a 150 foot fall. After the 20 minutes, the subject stepped down from the railing and gave my colleague a huge hug. He was of course taken into custody and transported to Mental Health.
We have a great picture of the probationer with his arms around my colleague in his full "scary, tactical" uniform... But wait, I thought we were all supposed to be "Jack-booted thugs."
EDIT: Well turns out my thread titles is now a half-truth. It made the local newspaper.
