I found half a dozen or so Orlite magazines in a single trash barrel at Burro Canyon after the ban but before the "acquiring" language was added.

I had a boatload of USGI aluminum mags, but had never handled an Orlite before I found them. Not sure why someone threw them away, they were all complete, but some were "sprung", where the floor plates were hanging on the bottom of the spring. None were broken, cracked, or incomplete.

They became my range mags for my RAW. still going strong, and my aluminum mags get to sit at home.

I've only seen LEOs come out to public ranges on two occasions.

The first being because someone else at the range called local LE because they believed a person who was bump-firing his AK had a full-auto weapon.

The second is the Clay Pits range in Oroville, CA where Game Wardens will occasionally stop in, but they just circle the parking area and leave unless someone is being especially unsafe. I've never seen them stop.

Detailed? Man, what agency offers this? I gotta try and get over there!

Frankly, so long you're NOT a known felon and you are a law abiding responsible citizen, I wouldn't necessarily jam you up for high capacity magazines.

In fact, I would find it hard to enforce such a law. There are so many different holes in that swiss cheese!

Help me my head is gonna explode!!!
I used to hate those "what if" questions that were so far out in left field that were simply nonsense -

The only proper response to those "what If" questions were. "If a frog had a glass *** it would be water tight"!

so even if it was a brand gun that never was around before 2000 ban, you can still have high cap mags and use them if they were rebuilds from other mags

at least all the reading ive done in the past said you could do so
If you stick a standard cap 30-round mag in a bullet buttoned OLL (i.e. post ban,) you are committing a felony, regardless if the mag's are pre-ban legal. You can only use your standard (30+ rounds) caps in RAWs and featureless.

              yes I know
who said anything about using them on BB rifles

that answer was in reference to handguns

Ok, my bad. I misread what you wrote as pertaining to rifles. You are correct on the handgun comment.

A couple of years ago at Oroville, a Game Warden pulled in and went down the line, checking AR's for bullet buttons. I don't know if there was anyone there with a RAW, but he seemed satisfied with whatever he was looking for and left.

I have also seen the Wardens run off people for bringing trash to shoot (TV's, etc.) which is fine with me.

Chunky lover- you heard wrong. The original large capacity mag in the end has to fit the original gun with the original caliber. IE- metal ar mag gets crushed- cant make a glock handgun mag. Another example crushed ar mag can be made into another ar mag because they share one common part and still can be used in the same caliber.

I have never heard of a police officer (on-duty) checking weapons/magazines at a range. We have better things to do. I'd say if this happened to you, he was off-duty (just messing around) or not an officer at all.

If a cop walks up and decides to question you regarding your magazines, he has already - in his mind - developed reasonable suspicion that you may be violating a law. He may be correct, or incorrect. That's why he's asking, and investigating.

So, if you lawfully own the magazines, a reasonable person would expect that you'd be able to speak to him as a normal human being and put his concerns to rest.

If you can't, or don't, the cop is likely going to make a choice as to what to do next, based on the data he has in front of him. And since you didn't tell your side of the story, that very well may be a direction that you don't like.

The cop may step back, think to himself, "Well yes, there are all sorts of legal ways he could have obtained this through his great uncle prior to the ban and then rebuilt it to be a MagPul 30 round magazine. Or, he could have just simply bought a rebuild kit and put it together in the first place."

Then he makes the decision as to which is more likely, and if he chooses the latter, you lose your magazine and you get your cite / handcuffs and that's that.

If it turns out he was incorrect in his assessment in the field, then you'll have your opportunity to explain that in court.

All that said, I've never, ever, seen this go down and I've been at a lot of ranges with a lot of cops and a lot of non-cops and a lot of standard capacity magazines.

                        No one gives two squirts'a'piss.

Try to remember, people, there is a time and a place to "assert your rights." And the answer to that is not all the time, all the place. Just as you can walk up to someone and call them an *******, because of your "first amendment right," does not make it the best thing to do, all the time. Yes, sometimes, but not always. The same goes for law enforcement encounters. There is a time and a place when it behooves you to be cooperative and answer questions, and a time when it does not.

Use some common sense, treat people -- all people -- with some respect and you'll find that these hypothetical encounters that come up on CalGuns and all over the Internet on a daily basis will go a lot smoother, or not happen at all.
